CHARLES LEAOH, OF MOOOOK, NEBRASKA,'ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDrL. VLAYOOOK, OF SAME PLACE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part o'f Letters' Patent No. 473,007, dated April 19, 1892. Appiimion tied Novembere, 1891. serai No. 411.082. (Nomodel To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LEAcH, a citizen of the United States, residing at McCook, in the county of Red Willow and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Wrench, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe, rod, and nut wrenches; and the objects in view are to provide a wrench adapted for lthe above applications, which is readily adj ustable to accommodate various sizes of rods, pipes, and nuts and to securely grip the same when applied.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be paiticiilarly .pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a wrench constructed in accordance with -my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the outer end of the rod and jaws.
`Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The handle l of the wrench is somewhat conical externally and is provided at its lower endor base with'a surrounding thickened band or portion 2. The handle is bored internally to correspond with its external appearance, and merges from an oblong recess 3 at its base toa cylindrical bore 4 at its upper end. In the bore 4 there is mounted a c vlindrical feed-rod 5, the upper end of which is threaded and receives an adjusting-nut 6, adapted to be manipulated by hand and to feed the rod into 0r withdraw it from the bore 4. The lower end of the iod is bifiircated, as at 7, and above the saine is provided with a stop 8, said bifurcations being provided with bearing perforations 9.
lO designates a pair of triangular jaws having their iiat edges toward each other and toothed, as shown, near their free ends, while their external edges are inclined to form bearing-shoulders ll. The upper ends of the jaws are oppositely disposed to form extensions 12, the outer edges of which are inclined in opposite directions, as shown, and the inner faces of which are cut away or recessed, so as to overlap each other. These extensions are mounted between the bifurcations of the feedrod, and a bearing-pin I3 serves as a pivotal means of connection'between the jaws and rod. Between the stop upon the rod and the inclined edges at the inner ends of the jaws a coiled spring 14: is interposed, the tendency of the spring being to open the jawsby pressing upon .the inclined edges of the extensions at opposite sides of the pivotal connection.
In operation it will be seen that by loosening the nut upon the rod the same may be fed inwardly and the spring will serve to open the jaws as they are lprojected from the end of the handle. Iii this manner the jaws may be spread sufficiently to engage over a bolt, rod, pipe, or nut and may be clamped thereupon by running the nut down upon the rod, thus drawing the jaws within the handle, their outer inclined faces riding against the opposite walls of the recess 4 of the latter. This having been accomplished, the Wrench is operated in the vusual manner for rotating the object upon which its jaws are clamped.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a wrench, the coinbination, with the coniat its upper end, the threaded bifurcated feedrod mounted in the latter opening and provided above its bifiircated end with a shoulder 8, the triangular jaws toothed at their inner edges and having outer inclined bearing-faces and at their inner ends recessed, overlapped, and pivoted between the bifurcations of't-he rod and projecting beyond the saine and inclined inward, and the coiled spring interposed between the inclined inner ends of the jaws and the shoulder 8 of the rod, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownI have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
, CHARLES LEACI-I.
