Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.v
EDUARD EHRENBERG, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
BRUSH OR BROOIVI.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettersrlatent No. 472,986, dated April 19, 1892.
Application led July 23, 1891. Serial No. 400,452. (No model.) Patented in Germany June 9, 1889, No. 49,873.
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, EDUARD EHRENBERG, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes or Brooms, (toI which I have obtained Letters Patent in Germany,No. 49,87 3, dated June 9, 1889,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of brushes and brooms which are adapted to deliver jets of water between the knots; and the' object of the same is to facilitate the process of washing the fronts of buildings, railwaycarriages, and other large surfaces.
In the accompanying drawings, in -which similar letters denote similar parts throughout the several views, Figure l is a side elevation of a brush provided with my invention; Fig. 2, a cross-section; and Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the same, showing a particular device within the hollowY stock adapted to regulate the discharge of the water, while Fig. 4 represents, in a longitudinal sectionof the brush, another position ot' the regulating device, as shown in Fig. 3.
In carrying Iny invention into effect I provide a hollow handle c and a hollow stock a, b, the former being adapted to deliver the water into the cavity (Z within thelatter,from which it is discharged among, between, and past the knots through a series of holes f, suitably and regularly positioned for the desired purpose. The hollow handle c is provided with a suitable hose connection to facilitate the supply of water. NVithin the hollow space d of the stock ct b I tit a slide or valve t, adapted to regulate the discharge of the water from the stock in respect both of direction and quantity. This valve g, which is admitted to slide longitudinally, has perforations gx, corresponding in number and position with those in the stock, and flexible tubes or studs h, entering the perforations f in the part b of the stock and capable from their adjustability by means ot a handle k in point of position to direct the water and regulate the quantity, so that it may be discharged 'either in right lines, Fig. 3, between the knots for rinsing or directed among the bristles, Fig. 4, as for washing.
Havingy fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A's an improvement in brushes and brooms, the combination of the hollow stock provided with perforatons between the bristles, the hollow handle, and the adjustable valve or slide Within the cavity of the stock, having exible tubes or studs entering said perforations, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improvement vin brushes and brooms, the combination of the hollow stock provided with perforations between the. bristles, a hollow handle, and an adjustable slide or valve having perforations corresponding in number` and position with those in the stock, and Iiexible tubes or studs entering the perforations iu the stock, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence ot' two witnesses, this `27th day of June, 1891.
