Be it known that I, JOHN MCCARTHY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Casket-Handles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to burial-caskets, and particularly to the handles thereon, and to providing such handles with an auxiliary support which will remove apart of the strain from the hinge-pin by which the handle-arms are connected to the body-plates and which in case the pins break will support the casket. My object is to produce a casket-handle in which the handles are mounted in arms which are hinged to the body-plates, and in which auxiliary supports are connected to the handle, said supports being connected to the body of the casket through the limited sliding connection, so that when the handleis raised the supports will relieve the arms of a large proportion of the strain, and, secondly, will support the casket in case the hinge-pin breaks. My invention consists in the several other novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in Which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a part of the side of a casket and a handle thereon provided with a chain reinforcement. A is a part of one side of a casket, and a a are the body-plates secured thereon, said plates being provided with sockets, which receive the ends of the arms I) of the handlebar 0, and through which the pintle cl passes,

creating a hinge-joint which permits the handle to be folded down against the side when desired.

To reinforce the handle and relieve the hinge-pintle of part of the strain thereon, I use flexible reinforcement B, which consists of a chain or chains or any other flexible cord 6, secured to the handle-bar or to the handle itself, and provided at its lower end with a stopperf, which may consist of a tassel or any other device adapted to draw up against the eye or stop 9 when the handle is raised, it falling down and drawing the chain through the stop or eye,substantially as shown in dotted lines, when the handle is folded down against the side of the casket. The stopper 9 is secured to the side of the casket in any ordinary and well-known manner.

In all cases the handle is reinforced against the strain of the weight of the casket, and the hinge-pintles are relieved of a large portion of the strain upon them, which reduces the liability of their being broken to a minimum.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with a casket, of the handles hinged thereto, auxiliary supports attached at their upper ends to said handles, and at their lower ends having a limited sliding connection with the side of the casket, as set forth.

2. The combination, with a casket, of the handles hinged thereto, a bearing secured to said casket, and flexible auxiliary supports provided with a stop upon their lower ends and connected to the handle-bar, and passing through and adapted to traverse said bearing when the handle is raised or lowered.
