UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK MEDART, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI; EDWARD J. MEDART EXEOUTOR OF SAID FREDERICK MEDART, DECEASED.
EXEBCISING-SWING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F REDERIOK MEDART, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising-Swings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to the type of swings used in outside pleasure or exercising grounds, and has for its object to provide a simple and efiicient construction whereby the seat portion of the swing is attached to the suspension ropes in a substantial and economical manner, and with which the wear of the ropes near their points of attachment to the seat is prevented, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1, is an end elevation with the supporting bar in section. Fig. 2, is a side view partly in section. Fig. 3, is a detail transverse section on line wa2 Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a plan view of the seat portion with parts in sec tion.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the different views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the overhead support of the swing, usually a section ofmetal tubing carried by suitable supporting brackets.
2 are hanger ieces clipped to the support 1 and provided with pendent jaws 3 for pivotal attachment of the suspension ropes of the swing.
4 are the suspension ropes of the swing, provided at their upper and lower ends with metal eyelets 5 and 6 by which pivotal attachment is in a die between said ropes and the pendent jaws 3, aforesaid, and the seat or board of the swing, respectively, and by means of the usual transverse pivot pins.
7 is the swing seat or board of the usual rectangular shape and formed with central gains or recesses 8 at each end in which the lower rope eyelets 6 are pivotally secured Specification of Letters'Patent.

by transverse pivot pins 9, which are arranged in transverse orifices in the ends of the seat or board and are held in place by a longitudinal section 10 of said seat or board, such section being secured in place after the pivot pins 9 are inserted in place, and as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4.
11 are transverse cleats secured to the upper surface of the seat or board 7 immediately adjacent to the inner ends of the gains or recesses 8 aforesaid, and adapted to afford side supports to the shoes of a person standing on the swing seat or board 7, and so that the shoes will be kept from forcible contact with the suspension ropes and prevent the abrasion and destruction of the same during continued use.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an exercising swing, the combination of a seat board formed with central end gains, swing ropes pivotally connected at their lower ends in said gains, and transverse cleats secured to the upper surface of the seat board immediately adjacent to the inner ends of the gains, substantially as set forth.
2. In an exercising swing, the combination of a seat board formed with central end gains, swing ropes pivotally connected at their lower ends by pivot eyelets and transverse pivot pins in said gains, a longitudinal seat board section securing said pivot pins in place, and transverse cleats secured to the uoper surface of the seat board iminediatel ends of the gains, substantially as set forth.
Signed at-St. Louis, Missouri, this 27th day of April 1908.
FREDERICK MEDART.
