POWDER-PUFF.

SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 471,680, dated. March 29, 1892 Application filed July 10, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELL-ENE ALICE BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder-Puffs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide a powder-pufi which is so constructed that none of the powder can escape when the puff is not inuse, and thus cannot come in contact with articles of clothing and soil the same, and at the same time the puff and a fixed quantity of powder in the same will always be ready and convenient for use.

The invention consists in a pouch and of a powder-receptacle formed on the upper surface of the lower part of the same, said powder-receptacle having apertures or slits. I V

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aview of the under side of myimproved powder-puff. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the putt, showing it adjusted for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same as adjusted when not in use. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the screw-threaded piece in the bottom.

The puff consists of a'pouch A, provided along its edges with apertures a, through which a cord B is passed, by means of which the pouch can be gathered or drawn'together at the mouth. A piece of punctured or perforated material 0, preferably chamois-skin, is secured along its edges to the upper surface of the bottom D 01' the pouch, forming a receptacle between the upper surface of said bottom and the under side of said piece 0 for receiving the powder. To fill this powderreceiving space a short part of the edge of the punctured or perforated piece 0 is detached, as shown at m, Fig. 2, the powder is poured in, and said part is stitched on again. used, the mouth of the pouch is opened and the. sides of the pouch .are turned down or reversed, as shown by Fig. 2, so as to expose the punctured or perforated piece C, the pouch being adapted to be used as a handle, as shown in Fig. 2. After the puif has been used the sides of the pouch are drawn upover the punctured or perforated piece and brought back into position shown in Fig. 3.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a powder-puff, the combination, with a pouch, of a piece of punctured or perforated material secured to the upper surface of the bottom of said pouch, forming therewith a receptacle for the powder, substantially as set forth.

I 2. In a powder-puff, the combination, with a pouch provided with a gathered part near its opening,of cords for drawing this gathered part togetherand a piece of apertured material secured on the upper surface, of the bottom of said pouch, forming therewith a reoeptacle for the powder, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination,with apouch provided in its bottom with an opening, of a threaded ring secured in said opening, a layer of punct ured or perforated material above the upper ELLENE ALICE BAILEY.
