POWDER-PUFF.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3 dated July 28, 1885.
' Application filed February 3. 1885. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELLENE A. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Charles, in the county of St. Charles and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder Puffs, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a powder-puff made according to my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view taken from the under side thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in receptacles for containing and applying powder for the purposes of the toilet, and the objects of my improvements-are, first, to provide a means for preventing the powder from sifting through the covering of the puff or receptacle, and, second, to afford facilities for applying the powder in a finely-separated condition and uniformly distributing it over the surface to which it is applied.
Let a, in general, represent a bag-like receptacle, in the form of a puff, for containing toilet-powder. This consists of an inner case, I), for holding the powder, which is made of a finely-woven cotton fabric, and an outer case, 0, composed of silken material, the two parts being united together at their lower edges, as shown at d, Fig. 2, and both provided at the top edge with a drawing-string, 6, so that each casing is opened independently. The bottom piece, f, which is secured to the united edges of the two casings b and c, is composed of a loosely-woven material having a nap or pile surface, like Turkish toweling and similar cotton fabrics.
Heretofore it has been the custom to employ a perforated piece of chamois-skin for the bottom of the puff; but a serious objection exists to expelling the powder through such perforations, as it must of necessity be deposited on the skin in separated masses, and
though attempts have been made to effect a separation of the grains of powder on expelling it no means so far have been found to be entirely satisfactory, except by the employment of a napped loosely-woven fabric, as shown in my present invention, in which case the powder is sifted or shaken out in finely'separated grains, and thus requires but a light passage of the puff over the surface of the skin to distribute it perfectly.
g is the handle, provided with a long shank, around which the drawing-strings of the casings are tied. On the lower end of the shank i is provided a circular plate, 11, over which the folds of the inner case b are drawn, to form a protection against the powder massing in the folds of the bag and sifting through when the puff is reversed in the hand.
By the use of two casings a waste of powder is prevented, as whatever exudes through or is shaken out of the inner case or recepe in the operation of applying the puff to the skin will be retained within the outer case, and may be used toward refilling the inner bag, which is easily done by loosening the drawingstrings e.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a receptacle for holding toilet-powder, consisting of two side or body portions united together at their bottom edges to a common bottom piece, and provided at their top edges with a separate closing device, as set forth.
2. A powder-puff consisting of a bag-shaped receptacle formed of material of a close texture and provided with a flat bottom piece composed of loosely-woven fabric having a nap or pile surface, substantially as set forth.
I ELLENE A. BAILEY.
