TOY CANNON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,558, dated March 29, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN B. KIBLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Cannons, of which the .following is a specification.

My invention relates to toy cannons or guns adapted to produce sounds by compression of air and the consequent breaking of a paper head or cover of an air-chamber.

The object of the invention is the production of an inexpensive toy that would be capable of producing sounds resembling the report of explosives.

In illustrating the invention I have adopted a device somewhat resembling a cannon, and in the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a toy, showing the devices in position for operation to produce a report; and Fig. 2, a similar View of the forward portion of the toy, showing it substantially as it would appear after operation.

In said drawings, 1 designates abody,which maybe made in semblance of a cannon, havinga cylindrical central opening 2. The body may be supported by a suitable carriage 3 or otherwise, as desired. At the front of the cylindrical chamber 2 is secured a rubber or other elastic hollow hemispherical or other suitably-shaped body l. Preferably the body 4 is provided with a flange 5, fitting on and secured to the end of the cylinder 1. Aring 6, hinged at one side, as at 7, with a suitable fastening, as 8, at the opposite side, is provided on the front end of the cylinder for clamping a piece of paper 9, so as to hold it air-tight on the flange 5.. In using the toy, the ring 6 is turned on its hinge and a piece of thin paper is placed on the end of the cylinder, afterwhich the ring is returned to position on the end of the cylinder and fastened, so as to hold the paper and prevent the escape of air between the ring and flange 5.

Within the cylindricalopening 2 is a rod 10, suitably guided in an opening in the rear end of the body 1 and having a head 11, fitting in the cylindrical opening 2. This head may be provided with grooves 12 for the escape of air when it is in operation. On the rod 10 is a coil-spring 13, hearing against the head 11 and the rear end of the cylinder 1 and exerting its force to thrust the rod toward the front of the cylinder. To operate the device, the .rod 10 is pulled out or toward the rear until a notch 14 is exposed at the rear of the cylinder, and a catch is then caused to enter the notch. As shown in the drawings, the catch consists of a" bail 15, hinged at the sides of the cylinder and arranged to have its rear portion enter the notch. Acord 16, fastened at 17 and passing through the rear of the cylinder and through a hole in the bail, enables the bail to be pulled upward so as to disengage it from the rod 10, thus releasing the rod and permitting the spring to act and thereby thrust the rod and its head to the front of the cylinder and against the elastic body 4. Acompression of the air within the hemispherical body 4 .is thus produced, and the movement of the rod being a quick one the paper 9 is burst, producing a loud report. The position of the head 1 when it reaches its limit of movement is represented in Fig. 2.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

l. A body providing a cylindrical chamber, a yielding diaphragm extending within the chamber and inclosing its mouth, means for holding the paper tightly over the mouth of the chamber, and a spring-operated plunger within the chamber, for the purpose set forth.

2. In a toy, a body providing a cylindrical chamber, a spring-operated plunger therein, means for holding the paper taut over the mouth of the cylindricalopening, and an inwardly-extending elastic cap inclosing the mouth of the opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
