UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
DUNCAN MCMIILLAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE MIDLAND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
HAM E-TUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,395, dated March 22, 1892.'
Application led .Tune 13, 1891. Serial No. 396,166. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it' may concern:
13e it known that I, DUNCAN MOMILLAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Clncinnati, in t-he county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CouplingStraps for garness, of which the following is a specificaion.
The object of my invention is to provide a neat and convenient coupling-strap that can be made Without inserting the buckle during the manufacture and which can be applied after all the other parts of the coupling-strap have been completed.
Another object of my invention is to secure and support the buckle by a rivet and clamp- Washer, which will finish and strengthen the same.
In the accompanying drawings the improvement is shown as adapted to a haine-tug cou pling-strap; but it can be applied equally Well to other coupling-straps of a harness.
Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings is a side elevation showing the strap completed ready to receive the buckle. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the finished coupling-strap. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the clamp-washer.
1 represents the base strap of the coupling. 2 the box-loop.
3 represents the prolongation of the basestrap to form a rest for the buckle.
4 represents a hanne clip, which is provided With the shank 5, which extends nearly through the coupling, and it is supported in a sheath.
6 represents filling straps on either side of the shank of the same thickness and forming a sheath or pocket for the same.
7 represents the top or finishing strap. It has been usual to extend this strap clear through and double it back through the loop inclosing the buckle. Instead of doing this I cut it o so as to form a short lap 8, which is formed into a loop to encircle the buckle and extends slightly within the box-loop, (indicated at 9, Fig. 2.)'
10 represents a clamp-wash er provided with flanges 11, which occupy the space between the buckle-strap and box-loop covering the edges. The edges of said flanges seat upon the bottom strap 1 and form a smooth tasty finish for the coupling. The buckle and washer are secured in position by means of the rivet 12, which passes through the Washer, through the leather, through an eye in the shank 5, pierced to receive the same and headed upon either side, securing the buckle firmly in position.
The method of construction is as follows: The base, top filling-straps, and loop are stitched together in the usual manner, with the loop 8 extending, as shown in Fig. 1, and clip-shank inserted. The buckle is then inserted in this loop and it is doubled, the Washer-plate applied, and the rivet passed through and headed down on either side, securing all the parts together. It will be observed that forward ot the flanges 11 the washer 10 has a projection, lip, or tongue extending within the loop 2, so that the loop will assist in holding it in position laterally and cover completely the splice or lap 8.
There are several advantages arising from thisformof construction. Thecoupling-straps ofthe harness are made irrespective of the size of the buckle employed. Then the buckle, washer, or other finishing ornaments may be applied, as occasion requires. Different-sized buckles may be applied, and in case of breaking the head of the rivet can be cut oft and removed and a new buckle applied Without interfering with the stitches ot' the coupling.
lIn this method of construction no stitching is employed or necessary to secure the buckle in position, the Washer 11 forming a tasty finish.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A strap-coupling for harness, consisting of the lower and upper straps 1 and 7, having the box-loop 2, the upper strap formed at one extremity into a loop 8, which engages a' buckle and projects into the box-loop, and the lower strap extending as a supportingrest for the buckle, the metallic washer 10, overlying the buckle-holding loop, and the rivet 12, passing through the washer, the lower and upper straps, and the buckle-holding loop, substantially as described.
2. A strap-coupling for harness, consisting of the lower and upper straps l and 7, having ICO passing through the waslielg'the lower and upper straps, and the buckle-holding loop, substantially as described.
In testimony Whereoi` I have hereunto set my band.
DUNCAN MCMILLAN.
