CHILDS FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,203, dated March 22, 1892.
Application led December 2, 1891. Serial No. 413,758. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'orcester, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Childs Folding Bed, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my present invention is to provide a folding bed of convenient and desirable construction for use as a childs crib and in which the operating parts are arranged for operation, substantially as hereinafter explained; also, to provide a childs folding bed with a commode-case. These objects l attain by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of thecommode case having the childs bed folded therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the bed mechanism as folded, with dotted lines indicating the positions of parts when partially unfolded and when completely extended. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through one side of the extended bed. Figxt is a plan view of the bed extended, the commode-case being shown in section; and Fig. -is a sideview of one of the slotted brackets.
Referring to parts, A denotes the case, which is preferably made as a commode, about thirty-six inches wide, more or less, about twoh feet eight inches high, and about eighteen inches deep. The front board and corner pilasters a are hinged at 5 to the base 6 to swing forward and downward, and shoulders or notches b are formed on said pilasters to engage with and support the breast-board B when in normal closed position. Sections of railing d or crib sides are rigidly fixed to the inner sides of the pilasters at a position that will conveniently pass within the case at the ends a', and extension sides d2 of similar railing are iitted adjacent to and between said parts d and confined thereto by suitable guides e, that retain the railings in connection while permitting endWise-sliding action of the part d2.
The front section F of the mattress or bed proper has its frame frigidly secured to the railing d? by screws 4, and the breast-board B is connected to the outer end of the extension part by hinges, as at a', so as to swing outward at its lower edge to a position where it serves as a supporting-leg for the outer end of the bed When the latter is extended, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The top as is rigidly attached to the endsa and back a2 of the case, and serves as a table for the wash-basin, pitcher, dac., as in other commodes. At the rear of the table-top a3 there may be carried up a suitable guard provided With a rod for sustaining the splasher curtain, as shown, or it may be finished in other suitable style.
The mattress or bed is made in two sections F F', both of which swing upward at their outer or forward end to vertical positions the front section F going with the extension-rails and front a of the case, as above noted, while the rear section F swings independently, the lower rear part ofits frame f being provided with an attached rod having projecting. ends J or with equivalent lugs or studs that engage in horizontally-slotted brackets M, xed to the bottom board of the case, thereby forming a loose hinging connection for the mattress-section F, which permits of kits being turned up into the back part of the case, as indicated in Fig. 2, where it can stand on its edge and be retained by its own gravity from falling forward.
The hinging-rod .l preferably extends across the bottom of the mattress-section F', and is secured thereto by a clip or screw at each side of the framef.
rihe mattress-sections are preferably made with rectangular framesf and f of ordinary boards, over which strong canvas or other suitable fabric is drawn and the padding or cushions arranged thereon in suitable manner, as indicated. The end frames of the mattresssections are best made with a downward curve or cut away on the top edge, as at n, and the edge of the fabric reinforced bya strong strip of webbing N to sustain it at the meeting edges of the two sections. The mattress-sections can, by taking out the two attachingscrews at each side, be reversed, so as to bring their opposite edges to the central position IOO when the first two edges become sagged by long usage.
The brackets M are made with slots m for the lugs or end of the mattress-hingng bar J 5 and with rounded or inclined upper fronts m', as indicated, and said brackets are disposed at such position that they will engage the ends of the sliding extension-rails d2 when the bed is folded into the com mode-case, thereby elevatro ing the extension-section and the breast-board l5, which is hinged thereto, so that the said breast-board will come up close under the top board a3 and its lower edge become seated on the lugs or shoulders at b. The rounded or inclined brackets M,in con j unction with the endwise-sliding rails cl2, also allow the extensionsection to drop when the front is swung outward from the case (see dotted and broken lines, Fig. 2) at the first part of the move- 2o ment, so that the upper edge of the end railing of the crib will not come in Contact with the top board of the case as it swings from or into the folded position. This drop action also facilitates the retention of the mechanz 5 ism in folded position by the seating of the lower edge of the breast-board on the lug or shoulder at b, while its upper edge is secured by a lock-bolt to the top board 0,3 of the case controlled by the key r.
Ample space S for storage of the pillows and bedding is afforded between the mattresssections F and F when the bed is folded within the commode-case, the hollow of the mattress-section F being presented to the front 3 5 when in upright position.
The rails d and d2 close into the case between the ends a' and the sides of the inattress-section F', the ends of the top member of the rail f1.2 resting on the top edges of the 4o brackets N, as indicated by dotted line at as in Fig. 2.
The hinges at 5 are best made by forming intel-matching rounded sockets on the pilasters aand the base and inserting a pin through the ends of the pilasters laterally, so that the hinge or joint is the same thickness as the pilaster.
XVhen folding the bed from its extended position, the bedding from the mattress-section F' is first folded over onto the mattresssection F, where it can be secured by a strap or other means, if desired. The operator then takes hold of the outer edge 0f the mattress-section F' and swings it into upright position, where shown in full lines, Fig. 2. The operator then takes hold of the outer end of the extended bed and as he lifts or swings it upward on its hinges 5 permits the extension rails to slide inward and brings the 6o breast-boardB into position beneath the front edge of the top, at the same time seating the edge of said breast-board on the lugs b. Then by turning the key fr the swinging front is secured in position. For unfolding, the
order of this operation is reversed, as will be readily understood without further explanation.
I claim as my invention herein, to be secured by Letters Patentl. In a folding bed, in combination with the casing, its hinged front, and extension part carried thereon, the mattress-sections F and F', one section arranged upon said extension and to swing with the front of the case and the other section arranged to turn back independently within the case and both sections disposed to swing up and down at their front or outer edges or each in the same direction as the other when folding or unfolding the bed, substantially as set forth.
2. rlhe inner mattress-section F', loosely hinged at its lower rear corners in horizontally-slotted brackets fixed within the case, as described, said mattress-section being adapted to be independently turned to upright position to stand on edge and maintain its position in the rear part of the case by its own gravity, in combination with the casing, the outer mattress-section, and the folding front, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the case having the fixed top and sides and the forwardly and downwardly swinging front, the side rails fixed to the interior of said front, the extension-rails and mattress-section carried thereby and capable of sliding movement on said front, and blocks or brackets M within the case that engage said extension-rails and impart a lifting or dropping action to the extension parts as they swing into or from the case, substantially as set forth, whereby the railing is'passed beneath the top of the case without interfering therewith.
4t. The combination, substantially as described, of the cabinet or case, the inner mattress-section F', adjustable to horizontal or vertical position within said case, the hinged front having lugs or shoulders b, the cribrails d, fixed to the interior of said front, the extension-rails d2, and outermattress-section F, confined by guides to have endwise movement on said front, and the breast-board B, hinged to said extension-rail and adapted to fit between said lugs?) and the top of the case, for the purposes set forth.
5. The combination of the case, the swinging front hinged to the base of sa-id'case, the fixed crib-rails on the interior of said front, the endwisemovable crib rails and outer mattress-section carried thereby, the rail-connectin g guides, the breast-board hinged to the movable part of the crib, the inner' mattress-section, its hinging-rod, and the blocks or brackets having slots for receiving the ends of said rod and surfaces for engaging said extension-rails, all substantially as set forth.
fitness my hand this 30th day of November, A. D. 189i.
HENRY VALKER.
