SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,121, dated March 22, 1892.
Application filed September 24, 1891. Serial No. 406,694. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. INGLEHART, of Collinwood, in the county of (Juyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pails,Buckets, Scuttles, and other Containers; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in pails, buckets, souttles, and other containers the body whereof is of metal and of an inverted conical or fiarin g form and the bottom whereof is of wood; and myinvention consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts, hereinafter described,.
and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation, partly in central vertical section, of a coal-scuttle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the lower portion of the body of the scuttle preparatory to the assemblage of the parts comprising the scuttle. Fig.3 is a central vertical section of that portion of the scuttle embodying my invention, showing the manner of construction.
A represents the metallic body of the scuttle. B represents the bottom, thatis of wood, and O the foot of the scuttle, the foot being also of metal.
In constructing a coal -scuttle embodying my invention the body A is made of the desired conical or flaring form, as shown in Fig. 2. The body is then turned down side up and the wooden bottom B of the required size and construction is placed in position at the lower end of the body, as shown in Fig. 3. Referring to this figure of the drawings, it will be observed that bottom 13 is grooved on its edge, as shown at b, the groove being prefably V-shaped and extending all round the bottom, b b representing, respectively, the upper and lower portions of the bottom, the construction of the same being such that when the bottom is placed in position at the end -of the body of the pail, as shown by solid lines in Fig. 3, as aforesaid, portion 12 of the bottom will rest upon the lower end a of body A, while portion 19 of the bottom will snugly fit the inner surface of the body. The wooden bottom having thus been placed in position the lower end of the bodyA, by means of a machine or tool suitable for the purpose, is pressed or bent inward against section b of the bottom, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3. The foot 0, that comprises a metallic flange or rim for the body and bottom of the pail to rest upon, having been made of the proper size and shape, is then placed in position, resting against portion 19 of the bottom and against the body just above the bottom, where it is riveted to the body, as shown at c.
A container constructed according to my invention does not only possess great strength, and can consequently endure rough handling-a matter of paramount importance in coal-scuttles-but its peculiar and simplev construction renders its production comparatively cheap.
Vhat I claim is- 1. The combination, with a body portion of a receptacle and a bottom having a circumferential groove therein into which the lower edge of the body is bent, ofafoot constructed to overlap the lower portion of the body and bearing on the portion of the bottom below the groove, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a body portion tapering substantially as described, of a bottom provided with a tapering edge corresponding in shape with the body portion and provided with a circumferential groove receiving the lower edge of the body portion and a foot encircling the lower portion of the body and bearing on the edge of the bottom immediately below the groove, substantially as set forth.
