SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,900, dated March 15, 1892. Application filed August 26, 1891. Serial No. 403,749- (No model.) Patented in Norway June 12, 1890, No.1,772.

To all whom, it may concern Beit known that I, NILs A. B. SCHOU, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Ohristiania, in the Kingdom of Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tourists Tents, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Norway, No. 1,772, under date of June 12, 1890;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionbf the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in folding tents for the use of photographers, tourists, sportsmen, and others, the obj eot being to provide a tent which can be readily and rapidly set up and taken down, and which can also be Very compactly folded, so as to take up but little space and be easily transported from place to place.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of atent made in accordance with my invention, set up and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear view. Fig. 4 is a rear view looking from the inside. Fig. 5 is a view of a pair of tent-poles in position. Fig. 6 is aview of a roof-pole. Fig. 7 is a View of a side pole. Fig. 8 is a view of the tent folded up, and Fig. 9 is a detail view.

In said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 indicates the upright tent-poles, made of wood or other suitable material in sections of convenient length, which may be connected together in any desired manner. As seen, these poles are pivoted together near their upper ends, and a pair of these ateach end of the tent constitute the uprights therefor, their lower ends being bifurcated, as at 2.

The numeral 3 designates the roof-pole, also made in sections which are adapted to be connected and disconnected, and tdesignates the side poles, which are constructed in a similar manner and formed at each end with notches 5, with which the bifurcated ends of the poles 1 engage.

With a series of loops or button-holes 13 upon its vertical edges, which engage with the hooks 10 of the cover 6. The rear of the tent is formed of a triangular piece 14 of suitable material, somewhat similar in shape to the front 12, but provided with top flaps 14 and bottom flaps 15. These flaps pass around the rear pair of tent-poles and are connected together on the inner side thereof by buttons and button-holes or by straps and buckles, as may be found most desirable. The bottom flaps are also provided with loops or straps which engage with the ends of the side poles. The rear edge of the cover'6 is provided with a series of hooks or eyes 16, through which a lacing-cord 17 passes.

The numeral 18 designates elastic bands which engage with the upper ends of the upright poles.

The operation will bereadily understood. The uprights are jointed together and pivoted at their upper ends, as shown in Fig. 5, with the roof-pole resting thereon. The back is then applied, and the flaps 14 14 and 15 15 are brought around upon the inside and respectively connected together. The side pieces are next passed through the hems in the cover, said hems being formed similarly to the hems in the lower edge of an ordinary window-curtain and the said side pieces inserted like a curtain -stick. The cover is passed over the roof-pole and the bifurcated ends of the uprights then engaged with the grooves in the ends of the uprights, and the elastic bands then passed around the upper ends thereof. The covering is then buttoned to the uprights and the front engaged withthe hooks thereon, and, finally, the structure is tightened up by means of the lacing-cord connected with the hooks or eyes at the back of the cover. The tent may be provided with the usual guy-ropes secured to pegs driven in the ground. The tent can be readily taken down by removing the covering and front and slde pieces and disconnecting and unjointing the poles and wrapping them up in the covering, which can be provided with the shawlstraps 20.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A folding tent comprising jointed uprights adapted to be pivoted together at their upper ends and having their lower ends bifurcated,the jointed side poles having notches near their ends, the jointed cross-pole, and the covering having hems at its lower edges, through which the side poles can pass, substantially as described.

2. folding tent comprising the jointed upright side and root poles, the buttons on said uprights, the covering having hems at its lower edges and button-holes at its front side edges and hooks parallei with said button-holes, the front piece having loops engaging With said hooks, the back piece having top and bottom flaps, the latter being provided with loops or straps and loops or eyes at the rear edges of the cover, and the lacing-cord, substantially as described.
