JAR-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,846, dated March 15, 1892. Application filed August 31, 1891- Serial No. 404,277. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM GAILBREATH CUMMINs, a citizen of McMinnville, in the county of WVarren and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ar-Holders; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in holders for jars, 850., its object being to produce a simple and efficient device adapted to be adjusted fox-holding jars or similar articles of different sizes.

WVith this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing my improved holder in position on a jar. Fig. 2 is a detached view.

A A represent two handles, the handle A being made with an enlarged head B at its outer end, having a curved diagonally-disposed face Ct, adapted to conform to the curvature of the jar O. A shallow recess is made in the curved face a, and in this shallow recess one end of a thin metallic band or strap D is secured by means of tacks or in any other preferred manner. The other end of the band or strap D is secured in any suitable manner to the outer end of the handle A.

Secured to the inner face of the handle A is a bar I), having a series of notches Z). The inner face of the handle A is made With a groove cfor the accommodation of the notched bar I), and at the outer end of this handle A and adapted to extend across the groove 0 is a plate or dog d, adapted to engage the notched bar I). The device thus constructed is placed on the jar, with the strap or band D encircling the same, and the plate or dog (1 engaging one of the notches b of the plate or bar I). The handles A A are then grasped and made to approach each other, whereupon the strap or band D will clamp the jar and permit the same to be lifted by the handles A A.

In lieu of the construction above described,

the notched barb may be displaced by a perforated 0r socketed plate e, as shown in Fig. 3, and the dog or plate d displaced by a plate f, having a projection f, adapted to enter the notches or perforations in the perforated plate 6.

By constructing a device as above described it may be adapted for holding jars or similar articles of different sizes.

Having fully described myinvention, WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a handle constructed at one end to conform to the shape of and embrace the side of a can and a band permanently secured to said handle and adapted to encircle a can, of a second handle to which the opposite end of the band is permanently secured, said handle adapted to be fulcrumed on the other handle at various points, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a stationary and movable handle, the former having a shoulder and the other adapted to be fulcrumed at various points on the other handle in rear of the shoulder, of a band permanently secured at its ends to said handles, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with a pair of handles, one provided with a toothed bar and the other with a recess adapted to receive the toothbar, the latter handle provided with a. plate extending across one end of the recess, said plate adapted to have engagement with the rackbar, of a band secured at its ends to said handles, substantially as set forth.
