V SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,152, dated March 1, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE BUECHELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vardrobes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to wardrobes and similar articles of furniture, and relates more particularly to wardrobes which are constructed in sections and adapted to be readily secured together or taken apart when it is necessary for shipment or otherwise; and among the objects sought to be attained are to construct a wardrobe divided horizontally into several StiO11S-i.6., two body-sections, a top section, and an ornamental section resting upon the top section, the body-sections being adapted to be separated and telescoped one within the other-whereby a very compact bundle or package is made forshipment, and the top section, ornamental section, and the doors of the wardrobe being adapted to be detached from one another and to form a separate bundle or package, which is also very compact and occupies but little space.

A further object of the invention is to provide a wardrobe divided horizontally into several sections and interlocking means between the sections, whereby saidsections may be securely held together.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a sectional wardrobe which is of simple construction and which may be easily put together or taken apart.

WVith the above-recited objects in view the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended clauses of claims.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete wardrobe, one of the doors being removed to show the clamping device. Fig. l is a perspective view showing the two sections of the body of the wardrobe telescoped for shipment, the door and sections 0 D having been removed. Fig. 2 is a like viewshowing in detail portions of the section B adapted to rest upon said section A. The latter is provided, as shown, with drawers A, above which is arranged a horizontal shelf A for a purpose presently described.

0 indicates the top section, which is removable from the body-section B, upon which it is adapted to rest when the wardrobe is set up. The upper edge of the section 0 may be provided with sockets to receive dowel-pins d, projecting from the under side of the ornamental piece D, whereby the latter is more firmly held in place.

For the purpose of holding the body-sections firmly together when the Wardrobe is set up I provide the lower section A with agroove a and dowel-pins a at its upper edge, into which groove is adapted to take a tongue I) on the lower edge of sectionB. Openings are to be provided in said edge of section B to receive the dowel-pins a of section A. To still further insure the firm connection of the sections A B, I provide upon the inside of the wardrobe, at each side thereof, the clamping device consisting of blocks 0 a, secured, respectively, to the lower and upper sections at their meeting edges, said blocks being tapered from one end to the other, as shown, and the upper edge of the block a and the lower edge of block 0 are beveled.

The said remaining portions may be compactly arranged to form a separate bundle for shipment.

A number of shelves may be provided within the sections; but they should be so arranged as not to interfere with the telescoping of said sections.

I am aware that horizontally-divided wardrobes and book-cases have heretofore been produced; but the body-sections thereof have not been adapted to be telescoped in the manner that my sections are, owing to the construction of the sections and arrangement of the inner shelves, &c.

By providing the shelf A a firm support is afforded during shipment to the section B.

hat I claim is 1. The herein-described wardrobe, comprising the sections A B, said section A being provided with the shelf A and the section B being adapted to be reversed and to telescope within the section A and to rest upon said shelf, the section 0, adapted to rest upon the section B, the ornamental piece D, adapted to rest upon the section 0, and the doors hinged at top and bottom to the sections B and A, respectively, said sections 0 D and doors E adapted to be removed from the sections A B, for the purpose specified.

2. The herein-described wardrobe, comprising the lower section A, provided with the shelf A and in its upper edge with a groove and with a dowel-pin, the section B, provided in its lower edge with a tongue and holes, as described, the piece C, resting upon the section B and provided at its upper edge with holes, the piece D, provided at its lower edge with dowel-pins entering the holes in section 0, the doors E, hinged at top and bottom to the sections A B, and a clamping device arranged upon the inside of the wardrobe and adapted to clamp the sections A B together, as and for the purpose specified.
