J. INGEL L S;
' HAME FASTENER.-
No.470,049. Patent ed Mar. 1,1892.
I I a I m vention.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES INGELLS, OF EAST JORDAN, MICHIGAN.
HAM E -FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,09, dated March 1, 1892.
Application filed September 18, 1891. Serial No. 406,126. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES INGELLS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East J ordau, in the county of Oharlevoix and .State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hame-fasteners; and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide a simple and durable fastener which conforms to the shape of the collar on which the hames are placed and is adapted to be used on collars of different sizes, and, secondly, to providea fastener in which there will be no lateral movement or play of the members one on the other to chafe the collar or other portions of the. collar with which the fastener may contact.
With these and other ends in view my invention consists in the peculiar arrangement of parts and details of construction, as will be hereinafter fully pointed out and claimed.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of ahame-fastener constructedin accordance with my in- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4: are bottom plan views of the members composing the fastener.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings, referring to which- A B designate the two members composing the fastener, each of which is curved longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 2, to conform to the shape of the lower portion of the collar, about which the hames are fitted. The member A is provided with a series of apertures a, which are separated by narrow strips a, and one end of this member is bent upon itself to form an eye or loop I), by means of which it can be attached to 'one member of the hames. The member B has one end bent downwardly a short distance to form a hook c and its other end bent upon itself and corrugated to form an eye or loop d, by means of which it can be attached toa member of the hames and an eye 9 to receive a locking ring or link 0.
D designates two downwardly-extending lugs which are made integral with the memher B and are situated a short distance from. the hook end 0 of such member. 'An operating-lever E is fulcrumed between the lugs D, and the upper end of this lever is provided with a hook e, the hooked end of the lever working in a slot f, formed in the member B between the lugs D. The lugs D are cut away on one face to form hooks d. A downwardlyextending lug F is attached to or made integral with the member 13 and has one of its faces recessed, as at f.
In using my invention the lever E is passed through one of the apertures a in the member A, and by pressing on the outer end of the lever the two members are brought together, the lugs F and D and hook c engaging with three of the cross-bars a of the member A. The lugs D and F are made the same width as the apertures a, so that any lateral movement of the members one on the other is prevented.
The member B is made stronger and thicker from about its center to one end, and on this thickened portion are situated the lugs D and F, and said member is reduced from about its center to its other end and bent upon itself and corrugated, as before described.
When the two membersare coupled together, the free end of the member A extends over such thick portion and bears against the upper side of the lever E, so that as a strain or pull is exerted on the loopbthe free end of the member is pressed closely against the lever E and forces it closer against the confining ring or link which is slipped over the end of such lever. The extreme outer end of the lever E is also bent slightly downward to prevent the ring or link 0 from slipping therefrom.
To uncouple the members A B, the ring 0 is removed from the lever, and by drawing such lever down the upper hooked end there, of takes around the bar a',which lies against the lugs D and pulls the member A clear of the lugs F and D and the hook c.
It will be noticed by reference to Fig. 2 that when the parts are locked together there is no strain Whatever exerted on the lever, the hooked end of which lies wholly between the lugs D, and that the lever is only used for drawing the member A to or away from the member B; also, that when the parts are locked together the lever is held so firmly by its own elasticity and the pressure of the free end of the member A thereon it is impossible for it to become disengaged from the ring 0 and fall down or be struck by brush or other obstacles, so as to uncouple the members when in use.
I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction of the devices herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention can be made Without departing from the spirit of or sacrificing the benefits of my improvements, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations in the form and proportion of parts as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hame-fastener consisting of a member provided with a series of apertures and having a loop or eye at one end, another member provided with a hook at one end and having its other end bent upon itself and corrugated, said member being also provided with a lug adapted to take into one of the apertures in the-other member and with two parallel hookshaped lugs which are arranged between the first-named lug and the hook end of the memher, an operating-lever fulcrumed between the parallel lugs and having a hook at one end, and a locking-ring fitted between one of the members and its corrugated end, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignatu re in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES INGELLS. iVitnesses:
