SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,985, dated March 1, 1892.

To all whom, it inayoonoern:
Be it known that WILLIAM TEAMER, formerly a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Evansville, Vanderburg county, Indiana, but now deceased, did during his lifetime invent certain Improvements in Fasten-' hanging of the bail and to the special form and bearing of the lever.

In the side of the mouth B are depressions O O, which are diametrically opposite each other and in which are sprung the pivotal angular ends h h of a bail E. This bail, which is preferably made of round wire, is formed with angular arms, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, springing from two parallel guides or braces 7a A", terminating in a pivotal fulcrum 1? for a locking-lever F, the bail E being free to swing and spring over a convex cap or cover D, and also over the edge of the mouth of the jar when the cover is to be removed.
To the fulcrum-joint or crotch d of the bail is pivoted the hell-crank lever F, the bill or shorter arm 6 of which is tapered from the head e and forms with the handle an acute angle, so that when the cover is locked in place on the mouth of the jar the point of the bill e bears in a depression I) in the raised nipple portion at of the cover and the handle part of said lever impinges against the margin of the mouth 13 of the jar. In
this position of the lever F the pointt' is a little to one side of a vertical line passing through the center of the jar, and the parts are held by the natural recoil of the springbail in the positions shown in Fig. 3. It will be observed that the lever F is prevented from lateral displacement by the parallel limbsk 7c of the bail, which also serve as guides for the lever while manipulating it. As the bell-crank lever and bail in their action form a toggle-joint, a powerful pressure can be brought to bear upon the cap and the tight sealing of the jar is insured. The formation of the central recess in the cap D for the action of the lever insures the'proper bearing of the latter upon the cap without necessitating any special adjustment of the cap' on the jar before sealing the same, and the bail hung to the jar provides a handle whereby the jar when filled with hot fruit can be conveniently carried from place to place.
Having described the invention of the said WILLIAM TEAMER, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of the jar and its cap with the pivoted bail having a converging upper portion termi nating in opposite straight legs located close together, with connectingcrotch'at the top, and a bell-crank lever pivoted to said crotch at right angles to the bail and swinging between and confined laterally by the parallel legs of said bail, said lever bearing with its short arm upon the top of the cap, substantially as specified.
