PROTECTOR FOR TRUNKS OR SHIPPING-CASES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,571, dated February 23, 1892. Application filed October 29, 1891. Serial No. 410,190. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH JOSHUA JEN- NINGs, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Jefferson, in the county of Marion and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Trunks or Shipping-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which'form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in guards or protectors for trunks or packing and shipping cases.
The object of the invention is to provide means which can be readily attached and detached from the receptacle, and when attached will protect each corner; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective View showing my invention applied to a box. Fig. 2 refers to views of one of the corner-protectors detached.
A designates the trunk or shipping-case to which I have shown my improvements applied.
B designates one of the corner cushions or protectors, said protector being made up of two rectangular pieces of leather which are connected to each other by a marginal row of I stitches. These pieces of leather inclose three semi-spherical blocks of rubber, the fiat portions being located against the inner piece of leather b, while the spherical portions are located against the leather 1). To the corners of these protectors are attached straps 0, two of which are provided with buckles, while the others have perforations, through which the tongues of the buckles pass.
In attaching my improved protector to a trunk or case the protectors are placed so that the corners of the case will lie against or between the rubber blocks hereinbefore referred to. The straps are then placed in engagement with the buckles, as shown, and drawn to firmly secure the protections in position.
This device not only serves as a protector for the surface of the case to which it is applied, but also asa brace to prevent the parts spreading.
By inclosing the semi spherical rubber blocks Within leather or similar material said rubber or elastic blocks are protected, and will therefore retain. their elasticity much longer than if they if they were exposed.
I am aware that it has been proposed to at tach a crate or bars to atrunk by straps which cross each other, also that it is not new to provide the corners of the trunk with rubber guards which are attached thereto, and I do not claim such construction as my invention; but
IVhat I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A protector or guard for trunks or shipping-cases, consisting of pockets containing semi-spherical cushions, said pockets having straps and buckles for connecting the parts to each other to hold them over and upon the corners of the case, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a trunk or packin g-case, of corner protectors or pockets containing semi-spherical blocks or cushions of elastic material incased between rectangular pieces of flexible material, and means for connecting the pockets to each other, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a pocket made up of two rectangular pieces containing elastic blocks or cushions, straps connected to the corners of said pockets, substantially as set forth.
