SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,171, dated February 16, 1892.

Be it known that I, PAULINO ORTEGA, of Mexico, Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Photoscopic Advertiser, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form of myimproved photoscopic advertiser. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the mirror and mirror-arm. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lens-supporting arm; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a mirror having letters or characters inscribed on the face thereof, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the stencil or screen.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to produce an improved device for attachment to electric lamps for projecting upon the sidewalk or some other surface contiguous to the lamps words, figures, characters, or legends for ad vertising purposes.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Upon the postAis mounted an electric-arc lamp B of ordinary construction. To one of the side rods a of the frame of the lamp is attached a clamp C, to which is journaled the first section b of the jointed arm'D. In the present case the said arm is formed of the sections 1) c d c f, which are jointed to each other alternately in planes at right angles to each other, so that the mirror E, attached to the last section f, may be placed in any desired position relative to the source of light.
According to one form of my invention the mirrorE is furnished upon its face with words or characters which stop off the light and produce a shadow upon the wall or other surface representing the characters on the mirror. According to another form of my invention, which is shown in Fig. 1, the mirror is arranged relative to the light, so as to throw the beam of light emanating from an arc lamp downward upon the walk or upon any other convenient surface, and between the mirror and the arc lamp is placed a double convex lens F, supported by the jointed arm g,which is attached to the side rodaof the lamp-frame by the clamp h. The lens F renders the di Vergent rays of the are slightly less divergent, and thus concentrates them upon the mirror E, which reflects them downward through a screen or stencil G, supported by arms 7), projecting from the post A. The screen or stencil G may consist of a metallic stencil, as shown in Fig. 5, or of a glass plate or photo graphic transparency. The light proceeding from the arc passes through the lens F to the mirror E, by which it is reflected downward in a slightly-divergent beam, and passing through the screen G casts a magnified shadow H on the walk below.
It is obvious that by changing the angles of the mirror and the lens the light may be projected laterally against a wall or surface prepared for the purpose, instead of projecting it upon the walk.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with an electric lamp and its support, of an adjustable mirror attached to the frame of the lamp, an adjustable condensing-lens placed between the source of light and the mirror, and a screen attached to the support of the lamp and bearing a device for casting a shadow, the mirror being arranged to receive light from the lamp eondensed by the lens and to project it onto and through the screen, substantially as specified.
2. In an attachment for electric lamps, the combination of an adjustable arm having an attaching-device at its inner end, a mirror secured to the outer end of the arm, an adjustable lens-supporting arm provided at its inner end with an attaching device, a lens secured to the outer end of the said arm,the screen or stencil for casting a shadow, and means for supporting the screen below the lamp to receive the rays from the mirror, substantially as specified.
