Description
UNITED STAT-ns- PATENT OFFICE.
HENRYS. LAWSON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT' IN WINDERS FOFtV OYSTER-DREDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patentl No.- 46,912, dated March 21571865.
To all whom itmay concern':
Be it known that I, HENRY s. LAWSON, ofA
theci'ty of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Winders for Drawing in and Y of vessels when engaged in dredging for oysters has but one shaft, to each end of which a crank is attached. In ord-er to allow of several nien working the Winder, as is required, the handle ot' the crank is long, and necessarily occupies considerable space. The application of the power of themen thus tothe., vshaft of the ,Winder heingdirect is theleasteconomical way of applyingsuchfpower, and -sntijec'ts themen t'c, accidents by "strain and oth erwise;l when anysudden or excessiwe force "comes upon, the'. winder. Serious accidents .have occurred to-the men-employedon boardof dre'dgingfvesselsY while usingthe, longhanded' Winder.
M y invention hasl for its object the consf-ruci,
tionof a Winder that shall 'be safer, Worked with a lesser .numherotmem and barella/more economical .application ofhpower than they l A '{tcr'controlthereel-shaft.; l
f Incase brakes are .used upon `the winder,
they will act' lmore promptly and' Aeticientl y Winder now 'generally used.:-
The drawing forming 'part'of this 'specifi-I cation represents by a top View myfim proved Winder, which is made up gof'l a reel-shaft, a,-
supported in proper bearings, 1), on top-ofthe frame c,` which reel-shaft'hason 'it two.reelfs,
d and e, with a clutch between them,:having an operating-leverpivoted toa-` bar below," or
being otherwise suitablyarranged and affixed to som@ Part ,of thegfra'me, so-that .theon'e reel or the 'other may. befbperat'ed-Lby*the 'crankshaft-'the reels' :being loose. .upon che ,feel-Shaft exeptithn' held bytheclutcn-sthe 'clutch bein gl -ofitha't kind-@usually known :as

crank and handle, n and o, at each'end. Near each end of the crank-shaft for a short distance this shaft is contracted in its diameter,
1as indicated at p, so that this shaft -can be slid in its bearings, and the-one' or the other end of thecrank-shaft and the reel-shaft bc 'by their respective wheels and pinions geared so as to operate the'one or the other reel. A curved har, q, hinged to the frame, will it into the space or recess made by the lessened diameter of the crank-shaft and prevent the shaft from sliding. A bar is shown on each side of the frame of the winder, and the two different conditions of the crankshaft, being gearedto the one or the other reel and the one or the other reel being' clutched to the v.reelshaft, are indicated by the red andthe ,black lines of the drawings. l
f This arrangement of the reels. allows of the one reel being used to operate the dredge from `the bow or` fore part of the vessel, and
the other reel being usedto operate the dredge 'from the stern or back partof thc-vessel, and
"of the throwing of the entire force moving thecrankshai't upon the one rcel.
This `arrangement of the crankshaft and 'the reel-shaft will require a lesser number of vmen-to-`perfcr1njthe same duty and exercise 'the -sainefpower .than theywinder' now in use andheretotlorenamed, while the men can bet- `through the crankshaft as here arranged in rfelationfto.l the vreel-shaft than if applied di- .'rectlytotheshaft of the winder, asheretotore Y "employed,
