CARRIAGE-STEP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,031, dated February 16, Y1892.
I Application filed April 10, 1891' Serial No. 388,425. (No model.)Y
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ETTA POST, of Oakland, Passaic county, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage- Steps, ot which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a carriage-step, in combination with a boot scraper and wiper by which boots may be brushed thoroughly clean before entering a carriage or other vehicle.
The invention consists of a carriage-step, beneath which is secured a frame formed t-o receive and holda mat or other suitable material, a scraper being located on said frame, substantially as hereinafter more particularly explained, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a side view of the carriage-step with combined boot scraper and wiper attached. Fig. 2 is a front view of the step with the hinged portion of the samelifted up, the frame, and the scraper and boot-wiper. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section of the step on the line Z Z. Fignl: is a top plan of step. Fig. 5 is a plan of under side of step.
In the drawings which form a part. of this specification, B is the step, which is secured tothe carriage A in any suitable manner, although in the drawings lugs a3 d3 a3 are shown as one means of securing the step to the wagon.
The step consists of two parts, one part being the hinged plate of the step d, which rests one end on the rabbet ct in plate B, the other end resting on the frame b', to which it is hinged by the hinges a2 o2.
The top of the step is grooved or corrugated, as is shown by o4 in Fig. 4. To the frame is secured the scraper-plate c, so as to leave the opening c for the dirt to fall through. In the frame there is a mat or brush d, which is secured by strap d2, Which passes through the holes d in the bottom of the frame. The mat or brush may be constructed or consist of one or more brushes or one piece of matting turning up on either side side consists of a plate with no opening, the
side which is not open to prevent dirt or slush from flying off the wheel into the frame containing the mat or brush.
The frame and that portion of the step shown by the letter B in Fig. 2 and the scraper c may be cast in one piece or in three pieces and the bottom of the frame and the scraper c in one piece and each side being separate castings, or said three pieces may be stamped out of sheet metal, the side plate b being provided With an upper iiange ffand a lower flangef. The different parts may then be secured by the pivots f3 and f4, as shown in Fig. 5, or in any other suitable manner. The mat or brush may be easily removed for the purpose of cleaning it or replacing it by a new one.
The hinge part of the step may be raised,` if necessary, when cleaning the boot or re- A step for a carriage or other vehicle, in
combination with a frame within which is inserted a iiexible detachable mat of suitable material, the bottom of the frame being provided at its outer edge with a scraper and the step consisting of two parts, one part being hinged to said frame, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified. Dated Paterson, New J ersey, April 8, A D. 1891.
