SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,704, dated February 9, 1892. Application filed April 27, 1391. Serial No. 390,692. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SNAMAN, J12, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefullmprovement ina'Combined Trunk and Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to improve the details of construction shown in Letters Patent No. 448,554, issued to me March 17, 1891.

To this end the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device with the lid open. Fig. 2 is a similar view with a part of an end wall of the trunk removed; Fig. 3, a view in elevation of the trunk-body extended to afford a bed-box and supported upon removable legs. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the bed-supporting legs detached. Fig. 5 is a view of an improved form of hinge and corner-band for the trunk-sections. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the device with the trunk-sections partly folded. Fig. 7 is a view of the lower half of one of the removable end walls of the trunk-body detached. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a modified form of the device embodying a tray located in the lid. Fig. 9 is a view in elevation of the device shown in Fig. 8 extended in position for use, having a pillow at one end, the bed-box formed by the trunk-sections having support upon removable legs. Fig. 10 is a similar view showing the parts in changed relative positions to aiford access to the tray in the lid, and Fig. 11 is a perspective view of a modified form of leg.

The trunk or chest body shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is composed of two equal sections A A, the upper section A having a lid B hinged thereto on one side edge, the free edge of the lid being provided with any preferred form of adjustable fastening, a spring-hasp a being shown. The two trunk-sections A A are each furnished with a removable end wall, where they are hinged together, which when in posi bent corner-bands b, which latter extend from one edge of a trunk-section to the other edge, and are thereto secured, whereby the corners of the sections are firmly stayed, the leaves of the corner-bands being perforated for the insertion of nails or screws to secure them in place. From the location given to the hinge-joint c on the corner-band leaves 6, said hinges are made to align with the impinging edges of the two body-sections A A, so that these may be folded and the section A placed directly upon the section A, as shown in Fig. 1.

A notch (Z is cut in the upper edge of". the corner-band leaves I), which are secured to the side walls of the lower trunk-section A for the reception of binding-hooks e, that project from the upper edge and opposite ends of the end-wall piece g, that is held in place to close the opening in the end of the lower trunkbody section A by provision of a cleat g" for each side wall of the section, said cleats be ing secured on the inner surface of the side walls of the lower section A, a proper distance from and parallel to the leaves of the cornerbands, which are upon the end of said lower section.

The binding-hooks e are formed to have a close contact with the outer surface of each corner-band leaf they engage, so that the insertion of the end-wall piece g to close the opening in the lower trunk-body section A will hold the side walls of the same against a lateral bulging strain.

\Vhen the two sections A A are folded together to form a trunk, the end wall 71 of the upper sectionA is inserted in place, cleats h being attached upon the inner surfaces of the sides of the upper body-section A, that will align with those on the lower body-section A and furnish means to retain the top piece or end wall h between said cleats and the leaves of the corner-bands b. The provision of the separate parts g h of the removable end wall and means to hold the lower section A from being laterally bulged, constituting another feature of this improvement.

The similar supporting-legs '0, provided for the body-sections A A when extended in the same plane to form a bed-box, are shaped as shown in Fig. 4, having a shoulder produced at 11 on one side a proper distance from the ends. There being a tenon-piece 11 formed on each of the legs, which slides within the staple-loops 70, that are attached at proper points on the sides of the body-sectionsA A, said shoulders engaging the topof the lid and bottom of the body-section A when the parts are arranged to form a bed-box, wherein the mattresses D of equal size are placed together endwise. The legs 0 of the trunk-body may also be made, as shown in Fig. 11, having an L- shaped tongue or piece of metal secured to the top end of each leg, and projected laterally, as at a", which tongue 4" is adapted to enter loop-plates, such as 70, that are .in this case secured upon the bottom of the lower trunk-section.

Preferably the thickness of the two mattresses D isso proportioned to the depth of the trunk-body sections A A that both mattressesmay be placedin the sections and fill them, or-these may beof less thickness than the depth of the combined trunk-sections, so

astoafford space for bed-coverin g also, as indicated in Fig. 2.

Fig. 6 represents a bed and 'two trunksections hinged together, as has been described, the lid B being dispensedwith, which in some cases may be preferred.

In Figs. 8, 9, and 10 there is a modified form shown, in which a tray G is hinged to the 7 upper trunk-section A, forming a recessed 1 open adjustment, as shown in Fig. 8, or-when closed, and the trunk-sections A A are extended, as represented in Fig. 10. Preferably there are spring-catches an employed to retain the edges of the trunk-sections A A in connection when one section is folded on the other.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A combined trunk and bed comprising two sections, each having a removable wall at one end and hinged together at said ends, substantiallyas described, whereby provision is made for opening the sections without removing the end walls, as specified.

2. A combined trunk and bed comprising two sections hinged together at onecnd, each section being provided with a removable wall at the hinged end, one of the endwalls having binding-hooks engaging the side walls of .the said section, substantially as described.

3. In a combined trunk and bed, the combination, with the two sections hinged together'at one end, the lower section having notches in its upper edge at the hinged end, of a removable end for said section having clamping-hooks for engaging the notches, substantially as and for'the pu'rposeset forth.

4. In a combined trunk and bed, the combination, with two sections hinged together and provided with staple-loops, of legs provided with vtenons to enter the staple-loops and wit-h shoulders projecting under the sections of the trunk, substantially as described.

.5. In a combined trunk and bed, the combination, with two sections, of right-angled bands hinged'together and secured to-the corners of the sections on the outside,,substantially as herein shown anddescri-bed.

6. A combined trunk and bed comprising two sections hinged together at one end and each havingare movable end wallat the hinged end and a tray hinged to one sectionandhaving a hinge-cover, substantially as described.
