OIL-CAN AND LAM P-FILLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,691, dated February 9, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES WM. PROCTOR, of Lake Forest, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Filler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in lamp-fillers; and its object is to produce a combined oil-can and lamp-filler which will afford a convenient receptacle for holding an ordinary supply of oil, and which may be operated to fill lamps without danger of spilling the oil.
To this end my invention consists of a lamp-filler constructed substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as it lies in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, showing the lamp-filler in an upright position, so as to be conveniently operated to fill a lamp; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the lamp-filler in its normal position, with the swinging filling-pipe locked in position.
The body of the filler consists of a tank 10, which may be made of any desired size or shape, but usually made large enough to hold an ordinary supply of oil for a family, and the tank is provided at the top witha handle 11, and'on the front side near the bottom with another handle 12, the two handles being thus placed so that the tank may be easily tilted into any desired position. The tank has also near its upper end a removable plug 13, whichis taken out for filling the tank, and which may be removed to give the necessary air-vent when the filler is used.
Near the top of the filler is a basin let, which is open at the top and which is secured to the back wall of the tank, and leading outward from the lower portion of this basin through the front wall of the tank is a pipe 15, which connects, by means of an ordinary swinging joint 16, with a swinging pipe 17, through which oil is delivered to a lamp. This pipe 17 is adapted to lie fiat upon the face of the. tank, and is provided near its free end with a faucet 18, and se cured to the face of the tank at a point opposite the faucet is a rectangular clip 19, which has a slot 20 in its face, and the faucet may be arranged to drop through the slot in the clip when the faucet-handle is lengthwise of the pipe 17, and after the faucet has entered the clip the handle may be turned so as to extend across the slot 20, and the clip will thus hold the faucet and pipe in place.
WVhen the filler is used, the lower end of it is first raised by the handle 12, thus allowing the oil to flow over the top of the basin 14 and fill the basin, and the filler is then set on end and the pipe 17 made to enter a lamp to be filled, as shown in Fig. The faucet is then opened and the oil will flow from the basin 14. through the pipes 15 and 17 into the lamp. It will thus be seen that only about the necessary quantity of oil to fill a lamp is held in the basin 1%, and when the lamp has been filled and the tank laid upon its back there will be no possibility of the oil leaking through the pipes and faucet.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A lamp-filler comprising a tank, a basin secured in the tank to the upper end of the back wall thereof and having an open top, a pipe leading from the lower portion of the basin out through the tank, a swinging pipe connected to the pipe leading from the basin by a swinging joint and provided with a faucet near its free end, and means for locking the swinging pipe to the side of the can and parallel therewith, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described lamp-filler, consisting of the tank 10, provided with the plug 13 and the slotted clip, the basin 14 in the upper part of the tank and having an open top, the pipe 15, leading from the basin through the tank, and the swinging pipe 17,provided with the faucet 1S and jointed to the pipe 15 by a swinging joint 16, said swinging pipe being adapted to be locked into the clip 19 of the tank by the handle of the faucet, as specified.
