PENCIL ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 468,658, dated February 9, 1892. Application led May 26, 1891. Serial No. 394,114. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. HAMILL, of Globe, in the county of Gila and Territory of Arizona, have invented a new and Improved Pencil Attachment, of Which the following is a specification, refereu ce being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in Which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pencil provided with my attachment, showing the at` tachment spread. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the attachment closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the device made in removable form.

The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for pencils which will prevent them from accident-ally escaping from the pocket.
My invention consists in a rod attached to the end of the pencil, a funnel-shaped rubber cup attached to or formed upon the rod and opening toward the head of the pencil, and a metallic slide for closing the funnel-shaped cup. It also further consists in a socket for receiving the end ot' the pencil and supporting the attachment, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
"When the device is to be permanently attached to the pencil, a metallic cap A, carrying the rod B, is fitted to the top of the pencil C. The rod B is provided at its free end with a iiange D, to which is attached a sleeve E, projecting above and below the said flange. To the iiange D is fitted the sliding tube F, furnished at opposite ends with beads a. In the upper end of the sleeve E is inserted an eraser formed of a cylindrical piece of soft rubber terminating in an expanded convex head b, and in the lower end of the said sleeve is inserted the annular collar c of the funnel-shaped cup G, which is also made of soft rubber.
lVhen the cup is expanded, as shown in Figs. l and 3, it engages the Walls of the pocket, into which the end of the pencil is in serted, and prevents the ready escape of the pencil from the pocket, While permitting of its Withdrawal by steady pulling. When the pencil is in use, the funnelshaped cup G is closed byforcing the tube F downwardly over it, as shown in Fig. 2.
lVhen it is desired to render the attachment removable, it is connected with a tube A', having indentations d projecting inwardly, as shown in Fig.4, to prevent the penciltip from being inserted into the tube a sufficient distance to bring the lead in contact with the closed end of the tube. In the wall of the tube is made a spiral slit e, which renders the tube eXpansible to adapt it to pencils of slightly-different sizes. The parts carried by the rod B are the same as those al ready described.
Vhen the rubber cup is expanded, it engages the walls of the pocket, so as to securely hold it in the pocket. lVhen it is desired to remove the pencil from the pocl et,it is pressed downward, thereby contracting the cup, so as to permit of the easy withdrawal of the pencil from the pocket.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A pencilattachment formed of an elastic funnel-shaped cup and a sliding tube for closing the elastic cnp,substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the tube A', closed at. one end, the rod B, attached to the closed end of the tube, the funnel-shaped cup G, carried by the rod B, and the sliding tube F for closing the funnel-shaped cup, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the tube A', closed at one end, the rod B, attached to the closed end of the tube, the funnel-shaped cup G, carried by the rod B, the sliding tube F for closing the funnel-shaped cup, and the eraser b, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the tube A', provided with the indentations d and the spiral slot e, the rod B, attached to the tube A and furnished with the flange D, the sleeve E, secured to the iiange D, the tube F, arranged to slide upon the sleeve E, the elastic funnelshaped cup G, inserted in one end of the sleeve E, and the eraser b, inserted in the opposite end of the said sleeve, substantially as specified.
