SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,593, dated February 9, 1892. Application filed November 1l, 1889. Serial No. 329,871. (No model.)
To LZZ whom t may concern.-
Be itknown that I, ROBERT P. BROWN, a citin Zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Paper Boxes, which improvement is fully setforth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a knockdown paper bOx having inner end flaps and Outer end iiaps in contact therewith, together with folds which embrace the upper ends of the inner flaps, producing several thicknesses Of material for stiffening or strengthening the ends Of the box and binding the inner end fiaps, whereby they are prevented from spreading and the outer iaps from separating or Opening. WVhen the box is made up, the end naps and folds may be connected by clips as additional fastening devices for said folds, the saine connecting the upper and lower end portion of said folds with the contiguous parts and holding the saine firmly and closely thereto.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of the box, consisting of side pieces B, inner end flaps C, outer end iaps D, folds E at the top Of the ends D, and a bottom F, all made from a single piece of paper suitably cut, scored or kerfed, andV folded, it being noticed that the flaps D fold against the flaps O and the top fold E is turned over the top edges of the fiaps O and embraces the same, by which provision the ends of the box are strengthened and the top edges of the aps C are stiened, there being in reality three thicknesses of material on said tops, excepting where the contiguous ends of the flaps C Overlap together, covering the entire end, and in such eases four thicknesses of material exist at or about the center of the ends of the box.
In Order tO prevent the separation Of the flaps CD and openingout of the top fold E, clips G are passed through the iiaps C D and bent over or through the top'fold E, thus clamping said parts C D E to each other. While three clips are shown in Fig. 2, it is evident that the number of the saine may be increased or decreased, as desired H designates the lid of the box, formed in general respects similar to thebody A, excepting that the end fOlds'Jon the outer end flaps L are sufficiently high or deep as tO elnbrace the inner end flaps K and also reach to the inside of the top H of the lid and bear thereagainst-` The sides B of the body A are provided at top with folds M, turned down from the same into the body, and the sides N Of the lid are provided with folds P, turned up from the lower edge of the saine into the lid, thus strengthening said sides, this, however, not being an essential feature. p
It is evident that the lid and body may be opened out and packed in flat condition, as in knockdown boxes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A knockdown paper box constructed of a single piece Of material and havinga bottoni with side and end pieces, the side pieces having side and end iiaps, the said end iiaps of the sides Overlapping and covering the inner face of the end pieces of the bottom, iiaps on the end pieces turned over the upper edges of the inner flaps at the ends, andclips passing through the end pieces and the Overlapping edges of the inner iiaps and bent over the top and lower edges of the end fiaps, substantially as described.
