SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,410, dated February 9, 1892.

Be it known that I, JOHN MALECKAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marinette, in the county of Marinette and State of Wisconsin, haveinvented a new and useful Vash- Board, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to wash-boards; and it has for its object to provide an improved device of this character which while providing a rubbing-surface having the requisite qualities for cleaning clothes, will not injure the same nor easily wear out, and also one which can be regulated to present a rigid rubbing-surface, and which can also be loosened and every part thereof reached, so that the same may be easily cleansed.

With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a rear perspective view of a wash-hoard constructed in accordance with my invention. Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A A represent the side rails of a wash-board, and are connected at the top ends and at a point above the lower ends by the ordinary cross-bars B. The soap-box C is located between the top board or bar B and the cross board or bar D, which forms the bottom inclosing bar of the soap-box C, which is itself provided directly above said bar D with a transverse recess or groove C', the purpose of which will be readily apparent. Each of the side rails A is provided with the longitudinal grooves o, intermediate of the cross-board D and the bottom cross-bar B, said grooves being designed to loosely receive the ends of face of the board. Bearing directly upon the top roller and having its ends working in said side grooves is the cross cleat or clamp F, which is tightened upon said rollers and loosened therefrom by means of the set-screw G, working within the recess C of the soap-box, and passing through the cross-board D thereof impinges upon said cleat and causes the same to either clamp all the rollers tightly together when the wash-board is in operation or to allow said rollers to freely rotate, so that the same may be readily cleaned with a cloth.

The construction and operation of my improved Wash-board is now thought to be apparent Without further description.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

In a wash-board, the combination, with the side rails having longitudinal grooves, of a rubbing-surface composed I of a series of rollers having their ends loosely engaging said grooves, and of a clamp ilnpinging upon the upper roller and adapted to either clamp all the rollers tightly together or to allow the same to freely rotate, substantially as set forth.

2. In a wash-board, the combination, with the side rails having longitudinal grooves and the bottom inclosing bar of the soap-box, of the rubbing-surface composed of a series of rollers having their ends loosely engaging said grooves, a cross-cleat Working in said grooves above the top roller, and a set-screw working through said bar and bearing upon said eleator clamp, which is adapted to either clamp all the rollers tightly together or to allow the same to freely revolve, substantially as set forth.
