SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 468,047, dated February 2, 1892.

Be it known that I, ROBERT E. MONROE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to toy targets and is intended to provide a target ofimproved construction in which, when the center of the target is struck by the ball or other missile used, the shot is marked by the appearance of a spring-actuated indicating-plate above the upper edges of the target-plate, and in which the target-plate is provided with novel and simple devices for holding said indicating-plate in position and for releasing and actuating the same.

I am aware that toy targets have been devised in which a shot in the center thereof is indicated by the appearance of a spring-actuated indicating-plate above the edge of the target-plate.

The novelty of my said invention consists in the devices employed to hold the said figure in position and to release and actuate the same when the center of the target is struck by a missile.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of an embodiment of my invention with the indicating-figure erect and appearing above the edge of the target-plate as it appears after the center of the target has been struck by a missile; and Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof in the same position, with dotted lines showing the indicating-plate folded downward against the back of the target-plate and held in position for a shot, like letters being used to denote like parts in both of the figures.

The target-plate (indicated by A in the drawings) may be of any convenient form, with or without concentric rings on its face, is furnished with a handle 0 on its lower edge, and has an aperture substantially in the center of the target-plate.

To the target-plate A, at any convenient point on the face thereof, is attached one end to fit in the aperture B and attached to the indicating-plate G at such a point that it will, when the said figure is turned downward and inward 011 the hinge H, enter the said aperture and be held frictionally therein. A retractile spring J is connected to the indicating-plate and the target-plate, preferably being an elastic cord, which is attached at its ends to the target-plate and passes about the indicating-plate G near the hinge II and op crates, when the boss I is released from its frictional contact with the edges of the aperture B, to turn theindicating-plate Gsharply upward on the hinge H, causing the greater portion thereof to appear above the upper edge of the target-plate A.

In operation the target is held in one hand by the handle C and the ball F is grasped in the other hand, drawn back, and then released. The contraction of the elastic cord E throws the ball 1 sharply against the face of the target-plate A. If the ball F strikes the boss I in thecenter of the target, the force of the blow releases the boss from frictional contact with the edges of the aperture B and the action of the retractile spring J causes the indicating-plate G to turn upward on the hinge II and to appear above the edge of the target-plate A, as hereinbefore described.

The indicating-plate may be in the shape of any of the automatic and visual indicating devices used in connection with targets, or the target-plate or indicating-plate, or both of them, may carry pictorial, printed, or any advertising devices.

I claim as my invention- In combination, a target having an aperture substantially in the center thereof, an indicating-plate connected with the back of said target by a hinge, a spring adapted to turn said plate upon said hinge, a boss upon said plate adapted to fit said aperture and to be held in position by frictional contact with the edges thereof, and an elastic cord attaehed to the face 01": said target and carrying a missile at one end thereof, substantially as shown and described.
