SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,949, dated February 2., 1892.
Application filed July 8, 1891. Serial No. 398,799. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT IV. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elza, in the county of Tattnall and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Cover- Fastener, of which the following is a specilication.
The invention relates to improvements in devices for fastening covers of barrels and other vessels.
The object of the invention is to improve the means for securing covers to barrels, casks, and other vessels, especially those designed for crude turpentine and similar liqnids, where it is necessary to have a tight joint between the cover and the body of the vessel, and Where it is desirable to have a cover adapted to be readilyV secured to the vessel.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central sectional view. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. l.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a barrel, of ordinary construction,'provided with a cover 2, which is circumferentially rabbeted and provided with tapering edges, forming a wedge-shaped cover adapted to be forced into the barrel to make a tight joint. The cover 2 has a central open ing 3, and arranged therein is a securing-rod 4, which has one end provided with a hook 5, adapted to engage a cross-rod 6 of the barrel, and the other end of the securing-rod is threaded and provided with a nnt 7, which is arranged on the outer face of the cover and is adapted to force the latter against the barrel to make a tight joint. The cross-rod 6 is V- shaped, and it is arranged a considerable distance from the cover of the barrel, and its ends S are threaded and are passed through openings 9 in opposite sides of the barrel and are engaged by nuts 10, arranged on the outer face of the barrel. By means of the securingrod 4 and the V- shaped cross-rod 6 the cover may be quickly and securely fastened to the barrel, and the construction ot' the coverprevents its groove or rabbet becoming clogged with gum, and by being V- shaped the crossrod has greater strength and is enabled to successfully withstand great-er strain than would be the case were it straight, and there is less danger oi' injuring the barrel.
The cover-fastener is specially designed for use on barrels employed forhandlingturpentine and pine gums, and in similar cases where it is necessary to have a tight joint between the cover and the body of a barrel or vessel and where means are required for quickly and securely fastening the cover in place.
What I claim is- The combination, with a vessel, of a V- shaped cross-rod passing through the sides ot the vessel and having threaded ends and provided with nuts arranged on the outer face of the vessel, a cover having a central opening and being circumferentially rabbeted and having tapering edges forming a wedgeshaped cover, and a securing-rod extending through the opening in the cover and having its outer end threaded and provided with a nut and its inner end provided with a hook to engage the cross-rod at the apex of the same, substantially as described.
