Description

No. 467,455. Patented Jan. 19, 1892.
FIGJ- WITN ESSES- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. IVELTY, OF \VARREN, ILLINOIS.
GATE-HANG ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,455, dated January 19, 1892. Application filed September 26, 1891. Serial N0.406,935- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. WELTY, of \Varren, in the county of J o Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use if," reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in gate-hangers; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter, and particularly referred to in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and cheap gate-hangerfor combined sliding and swinging gates, which can be applied to a gate-post and upon which the gate is slid until about balanced and then turned around.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my invention applied to a gate. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of my invention alone.
A indicates a gate-post, and B a combined sliding and swinging gate, both of which are preferably of the ordinary construction. Extending outward to one side of the post is a disk 0, which has an upper flat supporting surface D, and a laterally-extending arm E, that is adapted to be placed in an opening bored in the post, as willbe understood. This disk O has an opening for the reception of a pivotal bolt F, which extends downward from the center of an upper disk G, which has a fiat under surface that rests upon the upper fiat surface of the disk 0 and which allows the upper disk to be freely turned around thereon. Extending upward from the top of the upper disk is a rib or projectionI-I, which extends across the said disk, as shown. Secured upon opposite sides of this rib G are the side straps I), which consist of horizontal central portions having their ends turned upward, thus forming two substantially U- shaped straps. J ournaled between the upturned ends of these side straps I are the rollers or pulleys J with their upper peripheries considerably below the. upper ends of the said straps. One board of the gate is placed between the extended upturned ends of these side straps and upon the said rollers, as shown in Fig. 1. In this manner the gate is supported by the said rollers and held thereon against sidewise displacement by the extended ends of the straps. By means of a hanger of this construction the gate is slid endwise until thecentral vertical board K strikes the ends of the side straps, when the gate will be nearly balanced, and can then be easily swung around upon the disks, as will be readily understood.
I do not claim, broadly, a pivoted gate hanger having projecting ends between which a panel of the gate passes, and rollers between the projecting ends upon which the gate rests, but do claim a hanger of the specific construction herein shown and described, having U-shaped side straps detachably secured to the upper disk, whereby they can be removed and replaced when broken. Another advantage of this construction is that it enables me to use wrought-iron guides for the gate-panel, which are preferable, as they will not be broken or snapped off by slamming the gate, as is the case where the straps are cast integral with the disk, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A gate-hanger comprising two engaging disks, one arranged to turn upon the other, the upper disk having a projecting rib upon its upper surface, U-shaped side straps detachably secured to opposite sides of the said rib, and cross-supports for apanel of the gate between and below the upturned ends of the said side straps, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony WhereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE S. WELTY. Witnesses:
JOHN BIRD, GHAs. PHILLIPS.
