UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS M. UI-ILER, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,446, dated January 19, 1892. Application filed February 20, 1891. Serial No. 382,217. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. UHLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Pencil-Sharpener of which the following is a specification. This invention is an improvement in pencil sharpeners and holders, and has, among other objects, the special object of protecting the pencil-point from injury during sharpening and when not in use.
\Vith this object in View the inventionresides in the various novel details of construction and in the combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings in which I have illustrated my invention, and in which like figures of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device.- Fig. 2 isa longitudinal sectiohal view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line w w of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 1 designates a tubular holder, which is provided with the usual slit to enable it with ease to receive the ordinary pencil. Upon one end of the holder a raised roughened collar 2 is provided to enable the user to obtain a firm grasp of the device. Beyond'this there is the conical cutter portion 3, provided with the slot 4 and the cuttingedge 5, the said cutting-edge being slightly inclined to correspond with the desired shape of the pencil at the point.
6 designates a small tubular projection which extends from the smaller portion of the conical cutter 3. This small tube 6 is provided for the purpose of protecting the pencil-point as it is sharpened and gradually thrust forward. The chief advantage of this invent-ion is to be found in this tubular pro iection 6.
7 indicates an ordinary pencil.
In operation my improved pencil holder and sharpener is very simple and effective. The pencil has one of its ends inserted in the tubular holder 1 and thrust forward sufficiently far to bring the said end in contact with the cutting-edge 5, situated in the conical cutter portion 3. The user holds the device between his fingers by the collar 2 and rotates either the pencil within the holder or the holder around the pencil, or he rotates both pencil and holder in opposite directions. The knife by this operation is brought successively and gradually in contact with the wooden casing of the pencil and shaves the same to the required shape.
This invention has for its object to and does protect the pencil-pointduringthe sharpening and after it. The tubular projection 6 provides a guard for the pencil-point while it is sharpening and also after it has been sharpened, and in order the more effectually to do this the said tubular projection is placed in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the holder-that is, in the longitudinal axis of the pencil to be sharpened.
The tubular holder 1, it will be observed, is open at each end and is therefore adapted to receive and be permanently located upon the pencil, or, in other words, serves as a holder for the pencil. When the pencil re quires to be sharpened, the holder is simply rotated so as to remove the surplus wood and permit the point to pass sufficiently far through the reduced portion 6 to be used. When not in use, the pencil maybe slightly withdrawn in the tube 1 and the lead protected.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described pencil-holder, pointprotector, and sharpener combined, the same consisting of a tubular holder open at each end, one end terminating in a conical cutter portion provided with a cutter and a reduced tubular projection 6, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixcd my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS M. UHLER. Witnesses: E. A. BARNES,
M. A. BLANCHARD.
