UNITED STATES PATENT DEEICE.
JAMES MURRAY, OF HILLSBOROUGH, Ol-llG.
HOTEL-REGISTER..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,426, dated January 19, 1892. Application led January 24, 1891. Serial No. 378,960. (No model.)
.To LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, JAMES MUEREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsborough, in the countyof Highland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Hotel-Register, of which the following is a speciication.`
This invention relates to hotel-registers; and it has for its object to provide a register in which, instead of the bound book usually employed, a roll of paper may be utilized as a registry of the names of the guests of the hotel, a suitable permanent heading being provided as a part of the register, thus dispensing with several headings for each individual sheet. t
My invention consists in the improved construction of the casing Which forms a combined holder for the roll-paper and desk.
lThe invention further consists in an improved` revolving stand supporting the said casing.
My invention further consists in the improved construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which Will be hereinafter fully described, and particule-rl y pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a register constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the gures.
The casing of inyimproved hotel-register is composed of a box 1, Which may be rectangular or of any suitable shape, and which is provided at one end with flanges 2 2, connected by a shelf 3, which latter may be used for supporting an ink-well, pen-rack, and the like.
The top e of the box or casing is preferably composed of an inclined plate forming a desk or Writing surface. This top plate may be secured to the upper edges of the sides of the box or casing in any convenient manner, which shall enable it to be conveniently detached when it is desired to have access to the interior of the casing.
The sides of the box or casing 1 are provided with vertical slots or recesses 5, form ing bearings for a pair of transverse shafts 6 and 7, carrying rollers S, upon one of which a roll of paper is Wound. The paper is carried from the said roller through a slot or opening at the rear end of the top plate 4, over the latter down through a slot or opening 10 near its front end, and to the other roller, to which it is attached. The shafts 6 and '7, carrying the said rollers, are provided With projecting squared ends adapted to re ceive a crank or handle 11,by means of which either of said shafts may be conveniently rotated for the purpose of winding the rollpaper.
The rollers 8, upon Which the paper is Wound, are provided with longitudinal slots 12, adapted to receive strips 13 of met-al or other suitable material for the attachment of the ends of the paper roll. Said roll may also be provided at its ends with slips of pasteboard or other suitable devices to engage the fastening-strip; but such devices have been shown and described in another .application for Letters Patent iiled concurrently with this application, and they need not be herein more fully described.
The front end of the box or casing is provided with a thumb-screw 14, the inner end of which is adapted to bear against the front shaft G for the purpose of retarding the rotation of the said shaft, Which is the one from which the paper roll is in practice un- Wound. l
The Iianges 2 2 are provided at their front corners With inclined slots 15, affording bearings for a transverse shaft 16, carrying a bottom roller 17, Which is preferably composed of a cylinder of lead or other heavy material, covered with several thicknesses of blotting paper. Upon the ends of the shaft 16 are pivoted forwardly-extending arms or brackets 18, the free ends of which carry a crosspiece 19, upon which suitable headings may be inscribed, referring to the name and residence of the guest, and other heads which are customarily employed in hotelregisters.
The casing 1 of myimproved hotel-register is in practice to be mounted upon a revolvn ing disk or table. 2l, mounted upon an axle 22, that extends upwardly from a supportingdisk 23. The latter is provided with annular concentric iianges 24; and 25, extending upwardly and forming a track 26, in which a series of balls 27 are placed to support the superimposed revoluble disk 2l. The latter is provided With a doWnWardly-eXtendin g circumferential flange 28, fitting outside of the tlange 25 and having a thumbfscrew 29,
adapted to bear against a friction-block 30, depending from the said disk 2l and adapted to bear against the iiange 25 for the purpose of retarding the rotation of the revoluble disk or securing the latter invany position to which it may be adjusted. This revoluble supporting device may, if desired, be reversed, as'will be readily understood.
In operation the Casin g of my improved hotelregi`ster is placed upon the revoluble stand orsupport, which latter is mounted lupon the counter, as Will be readily understood. The casing may thus be readily swung around into position to enable the guest to register vhis ynia-me, after which it may be readily'restored.
This, as is obvious, couldnot conveniently be done, owing `to the Weight of the casing, if some such device as the herein-described revolving stand were not provided. The paper roll arranged in the casing '-will afford a register of considerable length, and inas'muchas only a small portion of the paper roll-is eX- posed at any one time the register is thoroughly protected from injury. Anyportion of the register may at any time be un-Wound fromA the receiving-roller for the purpose of referring back to some old portion of theregister, which may be afterwardrewound.
The general construction of the -device is simple, neat, andlattractivcaand the expense after the first cost will be much less than that of hotel' registers consisting of bound volumes.
I desire it to be understood that I reserve the right to any and all modifications which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Ialso desire it to be understood that While the form of my invention herein described is especially intended `and adapted for hotelregisters it may be used equally well for many other purposes to which roll-paper tablets may be applied.
Having thus described my invention, I claim* l. The combination of the box or casing having transverse shafts carrying the rollpaper, the inclined top plate having openings for the passage of said roll, the flanges connected by a shelf and having inclined slots, the shaft journaled in said slots and carrying a blotting-roller, and arms or brackets pivoted upon said shaft and carrying -a crosspiece upon which suitable headings may be inscribed, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the hotel-register of the classv herein described, of a revoluble supporting-stand comprising a disk havinga 'central pintle or axis and concentric annular flanges, a disk provided at its edge with a sing-leannular' iian ge, andthe interposedantifriction balls, substantially `as set forth.
3. The combination of the base-diskhaving concentric annularilanges `and a central pin or axis, the revoluble disk having a circumferential auge provided With'a' thumb-screw bearing Vagainst a plate` or block depending from said disk, the vinterposed anti-friction balls, and the register mounted upon' theup- Vper revoluble diskland `comprising a suitable box or casing having transverse shafts oarrying roll-paper, substantially as and@ for the purpose 4hereinset forth.
4. `The box or casing having the transverse shafts carrying the roll-paper, the'blottingroller, and the pivoted frame having the crosspiece 19 extendingy transversely of the paper roll, said cross-piece having its outer Vface ruled 0E and provided With suitable headings to guide the Writer, substantially as described. In testimony that Iclaim the foregoingras my own I have vhereto affixedY rmy signature in presence of two Witnesses.
i JAMES MURRAY.
