Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. MORTIMER, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEsKs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 55,101, dated September 15, 1874; application filed June 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN D. MORTIMER, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of referencemarked thereon, making apart of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a revolving desk having the central part constructed to receive a hotel-register book, or book for other public places where names are registered, orders given, or records kept, and the margin and sides of the desk constructed for advertising-slips; also, in the combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which-` Figure l is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A represents a desk-frame of any suitable dimensions, balanced on a central pivot, a, from a base, B, and turning around on small truck-wheels b b properly adjusted underneath. In the middle and principal portion of the desk is a depression or recess. made expressly for the urpose of receiving a register-book,
On the ight and left margins of the desk, and on the nt part of the head or'top ofthe book, running the whole length of the desk, (said margins being of any desirable width,) are placed slips of paper, d, on'which are printed or impressed advertisements or business-cards. Over the slips d I place strong glass plates h for the purpose of keeping the advertisements clean. Under the registerbook C is constructed a drawer, D, to be drawn out in front for note-heads or other paper, and on each side thereof is a drawer, E, one for envelopes and the other for cards. Upon the other three perpendicular sides of the desk I also place advertising-slips of paper with business cards or advertisements printed or impressed thereon, which may also be covered with glass. Upon the back and top part of the desk I construct places G G for inkstands and for pens, &c.
The back part of the desk is raised a suitable distance, as shown in Fig. l.
My adverti sin g-desk may be, and is designed to be, used in the offices of hotels, boardinghouses, express-offices, jeweler-stores, or in any other place where the names of guests or visitors are registered or orders are given.
The object of my invention is to'furnish a means of displaying advertisements to the traveling public, and to all persons who frequent or visit public places? As it is the custom for guests -at hotels and boarding-houses to register their names, the advertisements on the margins of the desk are readily seen, and when the desk is revolved those advertisements on the sides of the desk come in view, and thus the information is disseminated.
The advertisements may be displayed according to the taste of the printer and the size of the margins and sides of the desk.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the base B, the inclined desk A, with receptacle C, glass card-spaces d d on its top, and rollers b b on its bottom, and pivoted at a to the base, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of May, 1874.
JOHN D. MORTIMER.
