C. W. BCHER. TRACE CARRIER.
Patented Jan. l2, 1892.
7% Wemag UNITED VSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLYDE lV. BCHER, OF INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF r TO WALTER RIDER, OF SAME PLACE.
VTRACE-GARRIER. l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,843, dated January 1 2, 1892:. Application iiled July 20, 1891. Serial No. 400,142. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLYDE WV. BCHER, of Independence, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improveinents in Trace-Supports for Harness, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart hereof.
My invention relates to that class4 of harro ness attachments which are designed to receive and support the traces; and the object of my invention is to produce a simple, inexpensive, and durable trace-carrier which shall properly support the trace at the aninials flank, so as to prevent the animal from being lashed by the traces and which shall also be of such construction as to prevent wear upon the traces while the carriers are in position.
To the above purposes my invention conzo sists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my irnproved tracecarrier in position for use. Fig.
2 is an enlarged perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is a reversed or inner side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In the said drawings, referring to Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4:, l designates the back or body portion of my improved trace-carrier, the said back or body portion being of substantially oblong rectangular form and being constructed from a plate of any suitable metal.
2 designates the face-plate of the carrier. 4o 'Ihis plate is formed integrally with the back or body portion l and is connected to the upper portion of said back or body by a bend 3, which is integral with the upper end of said back or body portion.
The face-plate 2 is shown as of less length than the body portion l and as of substantially the form of a shield. This precise contour of the faceplate is not, however, material to the essential spirit of my invention, and the said face-plate may be of any suitanimals dank.
able or preferred ornamental form or contour, or it may be perfectly7 plain in form, as preferred. v
The lower end of t-he face-plate 2 is connected to the corresponding portion of the back l by a rivet i, or other suitable pin or projection, which thus extends transversely of the space between the outer surface of the back 1 and the inner surface of the face-plate 2, and this rivet or pin 4 is surroundedloosely 6o by a sleeve 5 for a purpose to `be presently explained.
In the center of the back l 1s formed a stud or projection 6, which extends outwardly from the outer surface of said back, and at its upper and lower portions this back 1 is formed with extensions 7, preferably integral with the back. These extensions 7 are formed in two pairs, one of which is near the upper end of the back and the other of which is 7o near the lower end of the same, each exte11 sion of each pair being opposite the other and the said extensions being turned inwardly so as to extend parallel with the outer surface of the back at a slight distance therefrom.
In the figures, S designates the trace, and 9 a strap which extends downward from the crupper-strap of the harness and over the There are of course two ot' 8o these straps 9 and two of the trace-carriers, and each strap 9 extends beneath the extensions 7 of the back l, while the stud 6 of said back enters one of a number of holes 10, which are formed in the said strap 9. Thus the carriers are securely and adjustably connected to the straps 9 while the traces 8 are retained in proper working position and are prevented from lashing the animals flanks.
It will be further seen that the sleeve 5, upon 9o which the lower edge of the trace 8 rests, serves by its rotation upon the rivet orpinat toprevent all wear of the trace. A suitable loop or cock-eye ll is shown as attached to the rear end of the trace S.
Having thus described my invention., what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved trace-carrier comprising a vertically-elongated body or back portion, a roo vertically-elongated face or front portion e011- neeted integrally at its upper end with the upper end of the back or body portion, a pin or rivet connecting the lower end of the face portion with the body portion, a bearingsleeve loosely surrounding the pin or rivet, a
' stud projecting outwardly from the outer side of the back or body portion, and two pairs of extensions located, respectively, at the upper and lower parts of the back or body portion In testimony whereofI acix my signature in` presence of two witnesses.
