G. W. KERR. END GATE FASTENING. No. 466,827. Patented Jan. 12, 1892.
YKETL TX TZ.
9 I 'llllllllllllllf/g-l L/ NWNEEEEE. XNVENTB UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE IV. KERR, OF NEIV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
EN D-GATE FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,827, dated January 12, 1892.,
Application filed April 15, 1891. $erial No. 389,002. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. KERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tail-Board Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fastenings for tailboards or end gates of dog-carts and similar vehicles, and it is the object to provide a device of this description which shallbe simple in construction and whereby the tail-board may be readily locked or disengaged.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the construction and combination of elements hereinafter fully explained, and then recited in the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may fully understand its construction and operation, I will describe the same in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and in which Figure 1 shows my invention in perspective with the parts in their locked position. v shows the parts separated and detached; Fig. 3, a plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a plan view of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a vertical longitudinal section on the line 1/ y of Fig. 3.
Like numerals denote the same parts in all the figures.
One part of my device consists of a base plate 1, adapted to be secured by means of screws or similar fastenings to the rear edge of the carriage-body. This base-plate carries an outwardly-extended ear 2, provided with a hole 3 in its outer end.
4 is a base-plate similar to the base-plate 1 and adapted to be secured adjacent thereto upon the other part to be looked, as shown at Fi 1.
g is a locking-lever pivotally attached to the face of the plate 4.. Its outer end is fiatretained in their engaged position.
Fig. 2
tened to afford a handle 6,- and upon its lower surface it carries a fiat button orplate 7. Below the pivotal point of the lever the plate 4 bears a short stud or hub 8 of such size as to fit easily into the hole 3.
As the operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description and drawings, it is only necessary to say that the two base-plates are secured to the respective parts of the carriage to be locked together in such mutual relation that when the tail-board is closed the stud will pass into the hole in the end of the ear The lever is then swung downward in the position shown at Fig. 3, whereby the parts are The engagement between the stud and the ear entirely prevents any lateral movement or shaking between the parts, and thereby rattling is prevented. Upon swinging the lever backward out of engagement with the stud and ear the parts are unlocked and the tail-board may be let down.
I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, since these may be varied in certain minor particulars without departing from the general aim of my invention.
I claim 1. The combination, with the base-plate having the outwardly-projecting perforated ear, of the complementary base-plate having thereon the stud, and a lever adapted to be swung in engagement with said ear and stud, thereby locking them in position, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the plate I, having the ear 2, provided with an opening 3 to engage the stud S, of the plate 4, carrying said stud 8, and a swinging lever having upon it a button 7 and a suitable handle, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i
GEORGE W. KERR. Witnesses:
