Description
UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPHUS L. WOOLARD, OF WILLIAMSTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
HAM E-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,158, dated October 28, 1884.
Application filed August 8, 1884. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, J. L. WOOLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamston, in the county of Martin andState of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harrie-Hooks. of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to haine-hooks, and to that class of the same which employs a pivoted latch to retain the chain or trace ffrom accidental detachment, and it has for its object A to provide a device of this character with a spring for holding the latch in position when closed, and to provide a lug or nib for limiting the movement of the latch when swung back to allow of 'the attachment of the draftchain.-
With these objects in view, the saidinvention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a hame-hook constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken through the latch and hook, and showing the spring for holding said latch in position. Fig. 3 is a bottom view; and Fig. 4 is a plan View, showing the latch thrown back to permit the a-ttach ment of the draft-chain.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents t-he hame-hook, which has an enlarged end, B, which is formed with a vertical passage or opening, a, for the attachment of the hook to a bracket or rod on the hame. The hooked portion is formed by recessing the plate as shown at b, and communicating with this recess is a slot or passage, c, located at right angles to the said recess b.
B represents a latch, which is pivoted to the hook near its forward end, said hook having a recess, d, to receive the end of said latch. The latchB is provided with a nib or lug, e, which bears against the outer side of the recess d, and thus limits the outward movement of said latch. Upon the forward end of the latch isprovided a downwardly-extending lug, C,
5o which its in and closes the passage c, its inner end bearing against the rear end of the said passage 0, while its rear side forms a stop for limiting the movement ofthe draft-chain.
D represents a flat spring, which is seated in a recess upon the upper side `of the 'hook adjacent to the passage c. The latch B is provided with a nib, f, which engages a depression or niche on the upper side of the spring, and thus holds said latchin a closed position. To disengage the spring from the latch, it is only necessary to depress said spring, when the latch may be swung back.
A haine hook constructed in accordance with my invention may be manufactured and supplied at a slight cost, it is strong and durable, and its operation is thoroughly7 effective.
Having fully described my invention, what I 4 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-\ l. The herein-described haine-hook, having an enlargement formed at one end and provided with a vertical passage through said enlargement, a latch pivoted in a recess of the enlargement and having a nib arranged to bear against one of the sides of the recess, an opening at the other end of the hook, said latch having a downwardly-extending lug at its forward end for closing the entrance to the opening and a flat spring arranged under the latch to hold it in position when closed, as set forth.
2. The herein-described hame-hook, provided with an opening, b, at one end and a transverse slot or passage, c, extending out from one side of the opening, a pivoted latch provided with a downwardly-extending lug, O, at its forward end, and arranged to close the transverse slot or passage, and a spring, D, seated in a recess of the hook and having a niche or depression, said latch being provided With a nib, f, to engage the depression of the spring, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPHUS L. WOOLARD.
