' R. ATTWOOLL. 0330K REIN HOOK.
WITNESSES .Attbrneya UNITED STATES PATENT rrrcE.
ROBERT ATTWOOLL, OF CLEAR LAKE, IOWA.
CHECK-REIN HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 1519,4537, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed March 30, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT ATTWOOLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clear Lake, in the county of Cerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Check-Rein Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference bethe check-rein, will prevent the detachment thereof from the hook.
With these ends in view the invention 0011- sists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a check-rein hook constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same;
In the accompanying drawings, in which like'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures, A represents the hook, which is constructed of a single piece of metal, and having its ends turned in opposite directions to facilitate passing the checkrein between said ends.
The check-rein hook A is formed with a countersunk recess, 1), which is preferably rectangular in form, and fitting in said recess is a spindle, B, which has a squared portion to fit said recess. The lower end of the spin dle is provided with screw-threads adapted to be engaged by a nut for securing the hook in place upon the saddle.
The spindle B is formed with a smooth upper end, and upon said upper end is mounted a roller, 0, having a conical lower end face, which bears upona conical flange or shoulder (No model.)
formed upon the spindle B, just above the squared portion of the same.
Within the recess in the roller 0 is located a spiral spring, D, whichbears against the upper end of said recess at one end and against the upper end of the spindle at its other end. It will thus be seen that the upper end of the roller is held in engagement with the side of the hook, and that when the roller is depressed to allow the check rein to be inserted behind the same said rein will be held in place as soon as the roller is released.
By providing a roller or idler to receive the check-rein it will be seen that the check-rein can easily move upon said roller when the head of the horse is turned in either direction.
The roller may be constructed of wood, rubber, or metal, the latter, however, being the preferable material.
The check-rein hook before described may be manufactured and supplied ataslight cost, is strong and durable, not likely to get out of order, and is thoroughly effective for the purposes intended.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination,with a checkrein hook,
of a vertical]y-arranged spring-actuated roll-.
er, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a checkrein hook, of a spindle having a conical shoulder or flange and a roller having a conical lower end to fit the same, as set forth.
3. The combination, with a check-rein hook, of a spindle having a flange, a roller supported on said flange, and a spring located in said roller and bearing against the upper end of the spindle, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT ATTWOOLL.
