Description

` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORDICAI LEVI, OF CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
PAVING- BLOCK.
n SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,351, dated January 5, 1892.
Application iiledIebruary 12, 1891. SeralNo. 381,197.` (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MoRDIcAi LEVI, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Charleston,in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pavement- 1ISlocks, of which. the following is a specifica- My invention relates to paving-blocks of that class in which a base is laid composed of blocks upon a suitable foundation and surface-blocks laid upon the base-blocks.
I have aimed to secure the greatest possible amount of stability to a pavement composed of myblocksbyprovidingalargebearing-surface for each surface-block,which rests upon `four base-blocks. I have also endeavored to prevent the displacement. of t-he surface-blocks by locking or anchoring them in place both against vertical and lateral displacement. I have further aimed to .render a pavement composed of my improved blocks noiseless by the in-terposition of a cushion between the base and surface blocks'.
I have shown in the accompanying drawings, in Figure 1, the preferred form of base and surface blocks with the interposed cushion between them. Fig. 2 shows the blocks in section and end elevation. Fig. 3 is a modied form of the brickswith the cushion.
In the drawings I have indicated the foundation or base blocks atA. The form shown Vin Fig. 2 hasa broad base with inclined side walls.` The upper surfaces of the blocks are abut against the edges of the adjacent blocks,
and thus forma recess adapted to receive the dovetail projection g on the base-block B. To
conform to the shape of the projection I make the walls of the base-blocks forming the recesses slightly inclined, and thus a lock is formed when the blocks are laid which prevents the surface-block from being lifted out lof place without separating the base-blocks' which hold it. The ledge f also forms a substantial support for the lower end of the projection g. The ledge, however, is not absolutely essential, as the projection on the surface-block may be made longer and extend to the bottom of the base-block, as in Fig. 2.l
The surface-blocks on either side of the central projection are provided with a bead or groove corresponding tolike formations in the surface of the base-blocks. These register and thus prevent lateral displacement of the blocks.
In order to deaden the noise usual to pavements made of blocks of this general character, where a pavement is to be laid in the vi cinity of a dwelling or around the same,I in- 'a surface-block having a central projection adapted to pass between the walls of the base-blocks, and grooves or beads in the surface-block adapted to the formations on the base-blocks, substantially as described.
2. Base-blocks `provided. with beads or grooves in their upper `faces, combined with surface-blocks having a central projection` adapted to pass between the walls of the baseblocks, grooves or beads inthe surface-block adapted to the formation of the base-blocks, and an interposed cushion between the two, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses;
. MORDICAI LEVI.
Witnesses:
