EXPANSION-JOINT FORM.
Application filed February 2, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. WVIEBERG,
citizen of the United States, residing at Chafiee, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented or discovered a new and useful Improvement in Expansion- Joint Forms, of which the following is a specification such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in a form for making expansion joints in the concrete or similar material used in the building of roads, drives, walks and the like, and in which the joint can be called a poured expansion joint, as when completed an open space is left for the joint.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a simple method of making poured expansion joints in concrete roads and drive to it; or by a holder which is left permanently in the concrete wh1ch necessitates paper and holder for each joint made.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a form for the making of said poured expansion joints in roads, etc., in which the bottom of said form has the shape of the road fi'mndation on which it is placed; the top of said form is crowned equal to the desired crown of the finished road; a length approximately equal to onehalf of the completed pavement width; a depth equal to the concrete surface of the road; a shape at the top to bevel the edges of the joint and formed so as to be separated and the parts easily removed after the concrete is sufficiently set.
With the foregoing and other objects 'in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made .in the construction and arrangement of the parts without de- Serial Ito. 616,608.
parting from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of this invention, my improved expansion joint form 1 consists of a vertical body and a horizontal top surface (Fig. 3) and shows in its end elevation somewhat like a plain vertical. T made in two pieces or plates 2 and 8. Pieces 2 and 3 are in elevation of the form as contact and joined on a diagonal surface 4;
at an inclined angle to the vertical sides 5 and G, in such a manner as to make the piece 2, larger at the top than at the bottom, and the piece 3, larger at the bottom than at the top. The top surface 7 of said T shape is connected at its sides by diagonal surfaces 8 and 9 to said vertical sides 5 and 6, to bevel the top edges of the expansion joint in the concrete and so save the labor of doing so by hand.
10, 10 and 10 are keys, dovetailed into both 2 and 3 on their surfaces 4, and holding them together into the form 1 shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Each of the keys 10,
10 and 10 is formed as shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 having two opposite sides with flat surfaces 11 and 12 spaced farther from each other (Fig. 6) at the top end 13, than at the bottom end 1 1-. The key also has two remaining opposite sides concaved into V shapes 15, 15 forming acute angles 16, 16 and 17, 17 at the corners (Fig.7) for dove tailing into the two parts 2 and 3 of the exness above the foundation.

Any suitable number of keys 10, may be used to hold the two parts 2 and 3 together into a solid form 1. In the drawings, three keys 10 are shown and opposite the top end of each key and in the piece 2, a circular deression 18, is shown to allow for the use of a tool 19 (shown dotted in Fig. 4). Tool 19 is inserted in the hole 20 of key 10 for the purpose of prying out and extracting the key from its keyway, preparatory to lifting up piece 2 and separating it from piece 3, which latter can then be also lifted out of the concrete. Keys 10, etc., are sunk flush with the top of the form 1 so as not to interfere with leveling off the concrete even with its top surface 7.
As a convenient means of lifting up piece 2, two rings 21, 21 are fastened into it by means of two eyebolts 22, 22. These rings 21, 21 and eyebolts 22, 22 are arranged to be below the top surface 7 of the form 1, when not in use.
23 is the end of the form 1 adjacent to the center of width of the pavement, while 24; is the end adjacent to the curb. Between ends 23 and 24, the top surface 7 of the form 1 has a crown or rise 25 from the end 24 to the end 28'. Thebottom surface 26 is shown as parallel to the top surface 7, as it is preferable to have the concrete an equal thick- In any case, the depth of my improved form is preferably made the same depth as theconcrete to be laid on the road foundation, whether the thickness is the same at crown and side or not.
The use and operation ofmy improved form is as follows: The form is placed in position, locked together, on top of the road foundation and if necessary pegged down in the ordinary or any suitable manner to hold it in an upright position while the concrete is being poured on either or both sides of it. If pegs or stakes are used on the sides of the form 1 to support it, they are ordinarily removed and the holes filled with concrete before it sets. After the concrete is leveled up with the top of my form and smoothed off it is allowed to set. The time for this set can be as long as desired, overnight if necessary. The tool 19 is then inserted in the hole 20 of each key 10 to pry it out and the piece 2 is then lifted and removed, allowing piece 3 to also be lifted and removed. This leaves a poured expansion joint and the form can then. be moved to an advanced position and the operation continued.
It will be understood that my improved expansion joint form canbe used the full width of the road with the crown in the center or lengthwise in the center of the road where the concrete work is put on the full width of the road, instead of one-half of the width of the road at a time, as here described, or in any other place where ex pansion joints are desired. The form when used along the center of the road, of course, would have the top and bottom straight to conform to the shape of foundation and concrete top surface desired.
Havin thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. An expansion joint form for concrete roads, consisting of two pieces fastened together on diagonal surfaces and adapted to be separated, whereby said form may be removed from said concrete road and leave an expansion joint. 7
2. An expansion joint form for concrete roads, consisting of two pieces in contact and locked on diagonal surfaces and adaptedto be separated, whereby said form may be removed one piece at a time from said concrete road and leave an expansion joint.
3. An expansion joint form for concrete roads, consisting of two pieces in contact and locked on diagonal surfaces and means to unlock said pieces, whereby said form may be removed from said concrete road and leave an expansion joint.
4. An expansion joint form for concrete roads, consisting of. two pieces in contact and locked on diagonal surfaces by means of keys and means to remove said keys and unlock said pieces, whereby said form may be removed from said concrete road and leave an expansion joint.
5. An expansion joint form for concrete roads, consisting of two'pieces in contact and locked on diagonal surfaces by means of keys below the top surface of said form, countersunk surfaces near-the tops of said keys .and together with said countersunk surfaces to remove said keys and unlock said pieces, whereby said form may be removed from said concrete road and leave an v:rpansion joint.
6. An expansion joint form for concrete roads, consisting of two pieces in contact on diagonal surfaces and locked together by means of dovetailed keys, means to remove said keys and means to separate and remove first one and then the other of said pieces, whereby said form may be removed from said concrete road and leave a poured expansion joint.
7. An expansion joint form for concrete roads, said form having vertical sides and consisting of two pieces in contact on diagonal surfaces, one of said pieces being large and the other of said pieces being small at the top of said form, and means to remove said form from said road by first removing said large topped piece and then removing said small topped piece.
8. An expansion joint form having parallel sides and consisting of two pieces joined together on diagonal surfaces to make the top of one piece large and the corresponding top of the other piece small, means to lock said pieces together below said top surface and countersunk means in the top of one piece to unlock said pieces, whereby they may be separated.
9. An expansion joint form for concrete roads, consisting of a vertical body with a top surface, the section of which is in the form of a T, diagonal surfaces connecting the sides of said body and the sides of said top surface, said top surface adapted to coni form to the finished top of said road, said form being in two pieces, one of which is large at the top and small at the bottom, and the other of which is small at the top and large at the bottom, and means to remove said form from said road by lifting first the large topped piece and then the small topped piece, whereby an expansion joint with beveled top edges may be left in said road.
