UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE OI1OF W. ANDERSON, OF MOORHEAD, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IIALF TO AUGUST G. ANDERSON, OB SAME PLAGE.
ADDlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICA'IION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 465,811, dated December 22, 1891.
Applicatlon file(l May 13, 1891. Serial N0. 392,644. (N0 model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLOF W. ANDERSON, 21 eitizen of the United States, residing at M001- l1ead, in the county 0f Clay and State 0f Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adding-Machines; and I d0 hereby deelare the following t0 be a full, clear, ancl exact deseriptionof the invention, such es will ena.ble others skilled in the art to whieh it appertains t0 make and. use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in adding 01' calcula-ting machines.
The object 0f myinvention is t0 provide an exceedingly simple device by means of whieh numbers may l0e rapidly and aeeurately addecl 01 subtraeted in a meehanical manner requiri11g little mental process. These objeets a1e aecomplishecl by and this invention consists in eerta.in novel features 0f construction an(1 in combination 0f parts, more fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed 011t in the elaims.
In the aecompanying drawings, whieh f0rm 21 part of this speeificationand 011 whieh like referen ce-letters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 represents 21 f10nt elevation of my machine as arranged f0r adding, having the buttons removed f10111 the left-hand bar, exposing the numbers 011 sa1x1e. Fig. 2 represents the reverse side a.s arranged f0r sul 1trztcting, havi ng the buttons removed from the leftband bar, exposing the numbers on san1e as in the former ca.se, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section 011 the line x 0c, Figs. 1 and 2.
The letters A, B, C, D, and E indicate 21 series of parallel ba1s 0f wood 01 other mate rial. Each bar is numbered from 0 to 9 011 the two sides, a's shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and is attaehed t0 frame G at both ends.- Upon eaeh 0f these bars nine sliding buttons a.re confinecl. The buttonts 211e 0f such 21 length that nine 0f them Will prefera.bly eover minetenths 0f the bar between the sides of the frame.
The maehine is operated es follows: If y011 wish 130 add, plaee the ma0hine es shown in Fig. l. The bar then at your right would indieate the unit-column, the 11ext one to the left the tens-column,the third 0110 t0 the left the hundreds-colurnn,and so forth. Tl1e m21- ehine, a.s illustrated, shows the result 385.
Should we wish to add three to this 2111101111t, move three buttons 011 the unit-column toward youand the portien 0f the bar then exposecl will show the figure 8. The total result would 5 5 then be 388. T0 this result should we wish to a.dd nine, move 0ne of the buttons 011 the unit-eolumn away from y011, exposing the figure 7, and move 0110 toward you 011 the tenscolumn, exposing the figure 9. T110 total result would then be 397, 2111d so 011. F01 subtraeting I turn the maehine bottom side up,
es illustmted in Fig. 2,z1nd proeeed the same 21s adding. F01 division anal multiplication this maehi ne is equz1lly effective; but I believe it is unnecessary t0 especially point 0ut the manner in which it is used for eaeh purpose 01 t0 cite examples of ealeulation.
It is evident that the machine 02111 be 0011- strueted as an adding and multiplying maehine only, ancl tl1at the buttons 02m be of any shape, made t0 slide in grooves witl1 the pumbers arranged in the bottom 0f same The extreme simplicity and minin1um n1111'1- ber 0f parts employed in this deviee and the many funetions renderit of the grea-test value 2111(1 utility.
VVhat I elai1n as newand desire t0 seeure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The calculating deviee consisting in 21 frame, the series 0f ways representing unit, ten, hundred, &c., eolumns, eaeh way provided with the numerals 0 t0 9, and the 111110 movable buttons f01 eaeh way arranged, substantially as described, 130 eover all of the characters except 0ne 011 each way, f01' the purposes sei; forth.
