J. 0. CHAPMAN.
SHOE FASTENING.
Patented Dec. 22
INITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. CHAPMAN, OF BOSTON, MASSAOI-IUSE'TS.
SHOE-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,753, dated December 22, 1891.
Application filed April 25, 1891- Serial No. 390,502. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that L -JOHN O. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Fastening Shoes and other Articles of Apparel, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention as applied to a shoe, and shows the side opening closed, with straps to button on the knob and angle-guides fastened to the side plates of the opening. Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the same applied to a low-cut shoe open, with the opening side plates, clasp, guides, knob, and a strap. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the side opening plates, clasp, slotted spring, bolt, nut, pin, rivet, stop-piece, and pivot-rivet. Fig. e
is a transverse section showing nut, bolt, clasp, the two side opening plates, and spring. Fig.
' and glove fastening;
5 is a longitudinal section showing the side opening plates, clasp, and knob. Fig. 6 is a plan showing the slotted opening plates and angle-guides.
My invention relates to a quick opening, closing, and time-saving metallic shoe, boot, and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In the said drawings, A represents a boot or shoe, to the opening of which, either at the side or front,I secure two plates a ahy means of rivet-s or eyelet-fastenings d; or I may fasten these plates to elastic strips sewed to the sides of the openings. The plates a ct are provided with grooves or channels 0 and are preferably jointed or pivoted together at their lower ends at cl, a slot e being provided to enable the side opening to be adjusted to 'suit the foot of the wearer. On each plate a is riveted a guide f, and between these guides ff slides a clasp B, having lips which slide in the grooves of theside plates a a, said clasp B being made tapering, as shown. To the clasp B is secured a knob g, by which it can be moved up and down, as required, to close or open the shoe. Over this knob are buttoned two straps h "L to hold the clasp B in position when drawn up. \Vhen the clasp is slid down by the hand to open the shoe, the tapering sides of its enlarged upper end are brought into contact with the guides ff, thereby pressing the side plates a a. apart to open the shoe as desired, holding them in this position while the shoe is being put on.
On the inner side of theclasp B is placed a spring 76, from the upper end of which proj sets a screw-bolt Z, which passes through an aperture in the clasp B and has screwed onto it a nut m, having a recess 10 in its top to accommodate a pin "12, passing through the bolt Z to preventthe nut from being lost, a sufficient space being left between the bot tom of the recess 10 and the pin n to permit the nut to be loosened. This nut m serves to clamp the clasp B to the side plates at awhen the latter are opened to anydesired extent. The lower end of the clasp B is loosely secured to the spring by a rivet q, passing through a slot 7* in the spring, whereby the spring is enabled to more to accommodate itself to the portion of the foot on which it bears.
s is a stop secured to the clasp B by the rivet q, said stop serving to prevent the clasp from being separated from the side plates at a whenever pulled up to its full extent.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A shoe-fastening composed of the side plates a a, pivoted together at (l and provided with grooves, the angle'guides f f, the knob g, straps h 'i, and the clasp B, adapted to slide upon the side plates a a, substantially as set forth.
2. A shoe-fastening composed of the side plates a a, pivoted together at (l and provided with-grooves, the angle-guides f f, the knob g, straps h 2', sliding clasp B, spring k, rivet q, stop .9, bolt Z, and nut m, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, 011 this 23d 'day of April, A. D. 1891.
JOHN G. CHAPMAN.
