Description

UNITED STATES PATENT 1GEEICE.
GUSTAV GOLDSCHMIDT, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
y METAL COVER Foa BooKs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,696, dated December 22, 1891.
Application led January 15, 1891. Serial No. 877,915. (No model.) Patented iu Germany August 30, 1888, No. 46,995; in England May 8. 1889, No. 7,420, and in Austria-Hungary September 5, 1889,1To. 21,796 and No. 38,684.
To a/ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAv GoLDscHMIDT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Berlin, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Metal Cover forBooks, (for which 1 have obtained a patent in Germany, No. 46,995, bearing date August 80, 1888; in Great Britain, No. 7,420, bearing date May 3, 1889, and in Austria- Hungary, No. 21,796 and No. 88,681, bearing date September 5, 1889,) of which the following is a speciiication.
rlhis invention relates to a metal cover, case, or binding for books and the like. The back thereof consists of a single piece; and it has for its object greater durability of the binding, and facilitates, moreover, the stamping of title or similar indications upon the back, or it allows the back to be perforated in casings for bound books, so that the title may be seen. Bindings for books as heretofore made and partly consisting of metal have either had a back of cloth, leather, or the like, and sides of metal or sides of card-board or similar material and a back of metal divided and hinged in the middle. v
The annexed drawings show in Figures l to 7 two forms of a metal casing or covering, and in Figs. 8 to 11 a metal binding.
The metal case or covering is so made as 'to be removable, and so represented in Figs.
l, 2, 3, 4, 4f, 4b, 5, and 6, and consists of a back u, with which metal corners b are connected by hinges. rFhe corners h h embrace the covers of the book, as shown in the drawings. Two of the hin ges-say at top and bottom-are fixed, while the other two are so made that when the covers of the book are in a certain position they may be moved, allowing the edges of the parts engaging with the book-covers to be raised clear of the latter, so that the entire metal covering or case may be removed. To this end the part c of the bottom hinge, fixed .to the back of the cover or case, has a slotf, corresponding to pin d. It is evident that when pin d and slot f face one another the corner-pieces may be raised so far that the covers of the book are released. (See the position shown in dot-anddash lines, Fig. l.) lVhen the upper corners are released, thelower ones are simply pushed oft the book, and the metal cover or case is removed from the book.
The operation of removing the metal cover and the construction of the sliding hinge are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and it. Fig. 2 shows a plan of a book fitted with such a case or cover, Fig. 1lb being the back and corners spread out.
The form illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 consists of a curved plate of metal g, which forms the back, and has perforations or apertures h, showin g the title of the book to which the case is applied. Fixed hinges connect the sides of this case or cover With the back. The side portionsform a frame open at top and inclosing the covers of the book. The part t' 'of the frame is by a hinge Z lined on the portion 7c of the frame, and a fastening m serves to secure the frame upon insertion of the book.
The metal binding for books shown in Figs. 8, 9, and 10 embodies the saine principle and is extremely simple and durable. Like the case or cover above referred to, covers or sides o o are attached by hinges. On the inside of the cover, near to the hinges, a strip of metal is so secured as to form a slot or recess between the cover and the strip. The book, being properly stitched, is secured in the binding as follows: The cords p, projecting at the sides, as usual, are spread out and secured between two strips of card-board q q', Fig. 11, and, if necessary, glued or cemented thereto. The strips yof card-board, with the cords between, are now inserted between the cover and the inner strip of metal and connected by punching bosses inthe metal or by rivets, as shown in Figs. 8, 0, and 10.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the said invention 'and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what 1 claim is- 1. In a metal cover, case, or binding for books, the combination of a back a with metal corners b ZJ hinged t the back d and. rigidly secured to the covers of the book, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the back a, having a hinge c, provided With a slot f, metal corners h h', having hinges c, provided with pins d, as and for the purpose set forth.
