U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. DAVIS AND CHARLES LEWVIS, JR., OF NEOSHO, MISSOURI.
TONGUE-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,355, dated December 15, 1891.
Application filed September '7, 1891- Serial No. 404.994. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that We, CHARLES E. DAVlS and CHARLES LEWIS, Junior, both of the city of Neosho, Newton county, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful I111- provements in Tongue-Supports, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Our invention relates to improvements in tonguesupports; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts,
as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claim. 1
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part of the front running-gear of a vehicle, showing our invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is abottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a right-angular brace which we employ in carrying out our invention. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the remaining parts of our invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the front axle of the vehicle, and secured thereto, or, more specifically, to the front face thereof, is a plate 2, provided with a central perforation 3.
4 indicates a screw-hook, which is adapted to be screwed into the axle 1 and passes through the perforation 3, formed in plate 2. Pivotally mounted on said hook 4 is a rod 5, provided with an eye 6, which is adapted to be inserted over the hook 4 and to rest against the plate 2. The plate 2 prevents the rod 5 from wearing away the portion of the axle which the eyelet 6 comes in contact with. Mounted on said rod 5 is a spiral spring 7, having enough elasticity to hold the tongue in elevated position and prevent the weight of the same from being supported by the necks of the horses.
. 8 indicates thetongue, of ordinary construction, and secured to the under surface thereof by means of a bolt 9 is a right-angular brace 10. Said right-angular brace is provided with a series of perforationsll, through which the bolt 9 may pass. It may be noticed fromthis construction that the right-angular brace 1Ov may be adjusted to and from the axle 1,as'desired. Said right-angular brace 10 is provided with a perforation 12,, through which the rod 5 is adapted to pass and freely move therein. V The spiral spring 7 is interposed between the right-angular brace 10 and the eye 6 of rod 5,
as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the elasticity of the same holds the tongue in an elevated position, as before stated. 7
Having fully described our invention, what We claim is e A tongue-support consisting of a plate 2, provided with a central perforation 3, ascrewhook 4, adapted to pass through said perforation, a rod 5, provided with an eye 6, mounted CHARLES E. DAVIS. I CHARLES LEIVIS, JUNIOR.
