JOHN SHAW, `or ELM, MICHIGAN.'
PATENT OFFICE. 5
. CHECK-REIN Hook.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,154, dated August 14, 1883,
Application filed June 1G, 1883. (No model.)
To LEZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. SHAW, of Elm l?. O., in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Im-V provements in Gheek-ReinHooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to `the accompanying drawings, which form a partof this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of those check-rein hooks which are provided i with means for preventing thecheck-rein from becoming accidentally detached.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, which forni apart of this speciiication, A represents a check-rein hook, attached in the usual man- "ner to theback pad, B of the harness, the
covering o f said Apad being lefthoff. C is the. check-rein attached to said hook. A recess,
`l), is formed in thelower side of' said hook,
within which is concealed the spring E. A
t0ngue, F, is pivotally secured between two ears, u, projecting from the lower side of the hook on either side of the recess D. The head `b of this tongue is' squared upon the top, as shown, and its corners slightly rounded, and the whole so combined and arranged that the spring will hold the tongue in a vertical posi- "tion with its lower and pendent end just escaping the parts below, except when such tongue is forced to the'front or rear to admit the attachment of the check-rein or its detachment. \Vhen the rein is `in engagement, thetongue should always be vertical, and the action ot' the spring willkeep it in that position, except when thrown out of its position to enable the check-rein to be attached or detached.
The combination, with a check-rein holder provided with a recess, D, and ears a., of the spring E, concealed in said recess,- and the tongue F, `with its head b secured between the ears a by the pivot c, the parts being constructed,'arranged, and. operating substantially as and forthe purposes described.
