MAGAZINE FIRE-ARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,248, dated December 15, 1891.
Application filed June 18,1 8 91.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnIL DREHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazine Fire-Arms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a magazine firearm; and the object of myinvention is to provide a fire-arm of this kind in which a considerable number of cartridges can be placed into a magazine, the said magazine readily introduced into the gun and the cartridges successively fed into the firing-chamber and withdrawn after being discharged, the empty shells being forced back into the magazine and the filled shells being forced by the empty shells into position to be introduced into the firing-chamber.
The invention consists in a gun provided with a chamber behind the breech end of the barrel, which chamber is adapted to receive a cartridge-magazine, U-shaped in cross-section, the chamber containing a sleeve adapted to be operated from the breech bolt, said sleeve being provided with a pusher, which pushes the empty cartridges when withdrawn from the barrel into the top opening at one side of the U-shaped magazine, and thereby forces out a cartridge at the opposite side of the magazine, which cartridge is pushed by the breech-bolt into the firing-chamber of the guln by the return movement of said breechbo t.
The invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, which will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the breech part of my improved machine fire-arm, showing the breech-bolt withdrawn and a cartridge in position to be introduced into the firing-chamber. Fig. 2 is asimilar view show ing the breech-bolt pushed home and the cartridge introduced ready for firing. The gun is provided at the breech end of the barrel M with a chamber A, adapted to receive the magazine B, said chamber having an opening on the under side of the gun, through which opening the magazine can be introduced. A pivoted latch 0, adapted to swing laterally, serves for locking the magazine in the chamber A; but it is evident that any other kind of locking device may be sub stituted for the latch 0. Through the top of the chamber A the sliding breech-bolt D passes, which may be of any approved construction, as the construction of the breechbolt, firing pin, &c., is immaterial. The breech-bolt is provided on its front edge with a cartridge-extractor D, of any approved construction, that slides in a groove D In the center of the chamber A a rod E is arranged longitudinally and is suitably fixed in the ends of the chamber. Said rod E is surrounded by a loose sleeve F, adapted to turn on the same. The sleeve F is provided at the opposite ends with oppositely-inclined ridges G G, on which the pin H can act, that projects downward from the front end of the breech bolt D. A curved spring-arm or cartridge-pusher J projects upward from the sleeve F, at or near the rear end of the same, said curved springarm projecting upward between two curved rods K K, which form a support for the cartridge m, about to be pushed into the firingchamber. Instead of mounting the sleeve F to rotate on the rod E, it may be mounted to turn on two short pivots or trunnions projecting from the ends of the chamber A.
The magazine consists of a box which is approximately U-shaped in cross-section, and is made of sheet metal and provided with the too outer wall a and the inner wall I), both U- shaped, which walls are secured to the end piece (I and the transverse partition e, arranged a short distance from one end of the magazine, both said end piece 01 and partition being U-shaped. The upper edges to of the outer wall a are extended upward and curved toward each other, and the upper edges of the inner wall I) are a short distance below the upper edges of the outer wall Ct to form the longitudinal openings f, through which the cartridges can pass into and out of the U- shaped compartment in the magazine. To the outer wall a a curved spring g is secured at each side, so as to project over the uppermost cartridges, as shown, for the purpose of holding the same in the magazine and pre venting the cartridges from dropping out while the magazine is being taken from the cartridge-box or magazine-box and introduced into the chamber.
The operation is as follows: After the last cartridge m has been fired the latch O is opened, so as to permit the magazine 13 to drop out of the chamber A, said magazine containing ten empty shells. A filled magazine is placed into the chamber A and the latch O is replaced, when the gun is again ready for firing. As the breech-bolt is withdrawn to cook the gun,the extractor D withdraws the empty shell from the firing-chamber of the barrel, and when said shell is entirely withdrawn from the firing-chamber, and rests solely upon the supports K, the pin ll strikes the forward end of the curved ridge G on the sleeve F, and by acting on the same turns the sleeve F and moves the finger J in the direction of the arrow :0, Figs. 3 and 5, and said finger pushes the empty shell from the supports K in the left-hand top opening of the magazine and presses it down in said left-hand compartment of the magazine, (see Fig. 6,) the pressure upon this empty shell exerting a pressure on the remaining shells or cartridges in the magazine, whereby the uppermost cartridge in the right-hand compartment of the magazine is pressed out of the top of said right-hand compartment and passes upon the two guards or rods K. (See Fig. 7.) As the breech-bolt D is pushed forward, it pushes the cartridge resting on the supportsK in the direction toward the firingchamber and into said firing-chamber. Just before the bolt has completed its forward stroke it acts on the side of the inclined ridge G on the forward end of the sleeve F and turns the sleeve in the inverse direction of the arrow 0c, the spring-arm J sliding along the under side of the breech-bolt and snapping under it to the other side of the same. The gun is cooked automatically in the usual manner by withdrawing the breech-bolt, and
' when the breech-bolt has been pushed forward to drive the cartridge into the firingchamber the gun is ready to be fired. The shell of the cartridge just discharged is then again withdrawn by pulling the breech-bolt toward the rear, and when the breech-bolt is almost entirely withdrawn and said empty shell rests upon the supports K the sleeve F is again turned in the direction of the arrow 00', Fig. 3, and the empty shell forced into the top of the left-hand compartment of the magazine, and thereby a cartridge forced out of the top of the right-hand compartment of the magazine, and upon the supports K the breech-bolt is pushed forward, and when it has about completed its forward stroke it turns the sleeve F in the inverse direction of the arrow as, and so on.
The magazine is adapted to hold ten thirtycaliber cartridges. By enlarging the cham ber and magazine the same can be'adapted to hold a greater number of cartridges. The magazine and shells therein can be collected by the soldiers to be refilled,'or, in case of an emergency or of war they can be dropped when taken from the gun. The magazines are very inexpensive, as they are made of plain sheet metal.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a gun, the combination, with a barrel and a chamber at the breech end of the same, of a sleeve mounted in said chamber, a breech-closing mechanism, mechanism operated by said breech-closing mechanism for rotating said sleeve, and of a cartridgepusher on said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
2. In a gun, the combination, with a barrel, a sliding breech-bolt, and a chamber in which said breech-bolt can slide, of a rotating sleeve in the chamber, a cartridge-pusher on said sleeve, means for operating the sleeve from the breech-bolt, and a cartridge-support above said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
3. In a gun, the combination, with a barrel, breech-bolt, and a chamber at the breech end of the barrel, of a sleeve mounted to turn in said chamber and provided with a cartridge-pusher, means for operating said sleeve from the breech-bolt, and a cartridge-support formed of two rods or wires above the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
4. In a gun, the combination, with a barrel, a sliding breech-bolt, and a chamber, of a rotative sleeve in the chamber, which sleeve has oppositely-inclined ridges at the ends, a cartridge-pusher projecting from said sleeve, and a pin projecting from the breech-bolt and adapted to act on said inclined ridges of the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
5. In a gun, the combination, with a barrel, breech-bolt, and a chamber at the breech end of the barrel, which chamber is adapted to receive a magazine, of a sleeve in said chamber, mechanism for turning said sleeve from the breech-bolt, a cartridge-pusher on said sleeve, and a latch for holding the mega zine in place in the chamber, substantially as set forth.
6. In a gun, the combination, with a barrel, sliding breech-bolt, and a chamber at the breech end of the barrel, of a U -shaped cartridge-magazine adapted to be placed in said chamber, and mechanism operated from the breech-bolt for pressing the empty shells into said magazine, substantially as set forth.
