i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. GRIFFIN, OF UTIOA, NEV YORK.
CIGAR-MAKERS STAND R TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,710, dated December 8, 1891.
Application filed January 3, 1891. Serial No. 376.614. (No model.)
To all whom t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Makers Stands or Tables; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and .use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to cigar makers stands or tables, and has for its object to provide means for keeping the bunches, pads, or
v books of wrappers or binders damp and in a moist condition and to dispense with the cloth now usually employed for that purpose. The means consists of a box or case that is divided horizontally into a series of compartments, the lowest compartment receiving and holding a supply of water for maintaining the wrappers in a moist condition. The upper compartment, which is separated from the lower compartment by a partition of perforated sheet material or wire-netting, receives the binders or wrappers, which are supported on the said partition and kept moist by absorbing the humidity arising from the water contained in the bottom of the said case. The case is provided with a removable cover, which for convenience is made in sections that are hinged together, so that one may be folded on the other to permit the removal of the wrappers Without disclosing or uncovering the whole top of the case. The case is designed to be tted in an opening in the table or stand, and is supported therein by an exteriorlshoulder formed, preferably, by a molding which is secured to the sides of the case near the top edge.
The improvement consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts, which hereinafter will be more fully described andl claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which-A Figure l is a perspective view of a stand or table embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a
perspective view of the case on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, a perspective View of the cover of the stand; Fig. 4, a detail perspective view, parts bein-g broken away, of one-half of the stand or table; Fig. 5, a perspective view of the partition or supporting-plate of the case for thewrappers, and Fig. 6 a cross-section of the case on a larger'scale.
The table or stand, composed of the legs e, the top E, and the sides P, has the partition O, extending from one side P to the other, to divide the table into two parts, and has drawers N, blocks M, and cases D. The cases are disposed at diagonally-opposite corners of the table, and their inner ends extend beyond the medial line between the two edges of the top E. Hence to adapt the partition Oto the position of the cases it is necessary to set one half thereon to one side of the said medial line and the other half to the otherside, the opposite ends of the halves being united by a short piece that is parallel with the sides P. Each case D is fitted in an opening in the top E and is supported in said opening by the molding C near its top edge, which overlaps the sides of the opening and rests upon the said top. nish to the case and prevents any material or dirt getting between the sides of the case and the edges of the opening. The case is preferably rectangular, and is composed of indurated wood fiber or of wood lined with paper or felt L and sheet metal G, the latter being the exterior or exposed lining. The cover of the case is composed of two or more longitudinal sections A A,which are hinged together and lined with sheet metal G on their inner sides.
The partition H, which may be of perforated sheet material or wire-netting, is placed on the cleats .I and divides the case into two horizontal compartments.
The lower compartment K is intended to receive and hold a supply of water. The upper compartment is designed to receive the wrappers or binders which are placed on the partition. l
For convenience of handling the cover each section is provided with ahandle F. In practice the bottom of the case is provided with a proper amount of water, which should not reach'to the partition, and the wrappers or This molding also gives a t IOO binders are placed on the said partition, and the cover, Which has been removed, is replaced.
The moisture produced by the evaporation of the Water in the bottom of the case Will pass through the partition and permeate or be absorbed by the said wrappers or binders and keep them moist and damp.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described stand or table for cigar-makers, having side pieces P P, the partition O, extendingfrom one side piece to the
