UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP H. BRANSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-LAMP POSTS.
l Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,44 4, dated February 21, 1965.
` To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, PHILIP H. BRANsoN, of the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Street-Lamp Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon and forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of one of the posts inthe ground. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the base of the post separate from the upper part. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the sleeve or lower end of the upper post.
The invention relates to constructing lampposts in two parts-viz., a base, which is set in the ground, and a column or upper post, which has a sleeve on its lower end which ts into the upper end of the base. By making lamp-posts in this manner great saving may be made in the original cost of the post, and in case the upper part of thepost is broken it is easily replaced by a new one, without the trouble and expense of digging up the old base, which frequently has to be delayed from inclemency of the weather.
The base A of the post has a ange, b, around it near its lower end, which, when it is in position, receives the weight of the post land prevents its sinkinginto soft soil. There is a collar, d, around the upper end of the base A, on which the base c ofthe upper post, B, rests. The upper piece of the post B has a sleeve, c', on its lower end below the base e, which ts into the cavity of the base A. 'lhe arrangement of the sleeve c is clearly shown in Fig.
2. The sleeve c has a number of chippingstrips, 0', projecting from its sides, as seen in Fig. 3. By casting the post with these chipping-strips on it it can be easily fitted tightly to the base A with no other tools than a hammer and cold-chisel.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as a new manufacture and desire to secure by'Letters Patentv l. A lamp-post constructed in two parts, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The employment of the chipping-strips 0', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
` PHILIP H. BRANSON. Witnesses:
M. RANDOLPH, JNO. W. HERTIIEL.
