SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,890, dated August 29, 1899. Application led May 26, 1899. Serial No. '7] 8,323. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.'
Be it known that I, I/VILLIAM A. HAW- THORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chittenden, county of Santa Cruz, State 'of California, have invented an Improvement in Mortuary Monuments; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description of the same.
My invention relates to a device for indicating the last resting-place of deceased individuals; and it consists of a metallic monument and means connected therewith within which the ashes of the deceased person may be contained in case of cremation and also means for exhibiting a counterfeit presentment of the face or figure of the person of the deceased.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a general view. 2 is a sectional View.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for marking the last resting-place of deceased individuals by the employment of a metallic structure which is more enduring and less expensive than the usual stone or marble monuments and which allows for the convenient attachment of portraits, medallions, statuettes, and also a receptacle in which in case of cremation the ashes may be contained.
In the construction of my device I have shown a base A, which may be of any suitable or usual construction, having a standard B of any ornamental form, as shown. This standard is hollow, and the upper end being open is adapted to receive the shank O of the upper portion of the device, which is inserted therein, and may be secured by setscrews or permanently by rivets or other suitable fastening.
Across the top of the part C extends the tubular section D, the two forming a T-cross, as shown, and when the two parts have been placed together the convexity of the horizontal portion D will lie in the concavity of the upper end of the part B, so as to form a close joint therewith.
The tubes of which this structure is formed may be of any suitable or desired metal, preferably a metal which is least subject to atmospheric action and corrosion, and the exterior surface may be otherwise protected, if found desirable.
Upon the ends of the tube D are iitted caps E, which may be screwed or otherwise fitted upon the part B or permanently secured by rivets or otherwise, if preferred. The tubes are all made of considerableV diameter, and the transverse tube B is of sufficient capacity to receive the ashes of the deceased if the body has been subjected to cremation. After the ashes have been placed Vin the tube the caps may be secured and permanently sealed thereon.
Either one or both of the ends of the caps E may be countersu nk and adapted to receive portraits or medallions having` a counterfeit presentment of the deceased affixed therein and secured permanently or in any suitable manner.
If desired, a statuette or figure of any kind may be erected upon the central upper portion of the transverse tube D between the adjacent ends of the caps E.
The surfaces of the caps are suitable for engraving the name and other matter relating to the deceased.
The whole device is very ornamental and graceful, light in appearance, and ineXpen sive to construct, and provides an artistic and permanent monument for the purposes described.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A mortuary monument comprising a base, a vertical metallic tubular standard supported from said base, tubular arms connected with the upper end of said standard having end caps adapted to receive medallions which are aflixed therein.
2. A mortuary monument consisting of a vertical ornamental standard and a base in which it is supported, a horizontal tubular container having a Vertical shank adapted to it and be secured in the standard and independent caps iixed upon the ends of the hori- Zontal portion as described.
