ELISHA MORGAN, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOILET-PAPER HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,377, dated December 1, 1891. Application filed September 18, 1891. Serial No.406,050. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ELISHA MORGAN, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet- Paper Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Toilet-paper is usually put up for the trade in the form of packages of loose sheets or sheets wired itogether or in the form of rolls that are adapted for co-operation with some kind of fixtures or holders.
Perforated paper in roll form has become particularly popular, and but for the inconvenience and ofttimes the difficulty experienced by consumers in applying the rolls to the fixtures or holders designed to hold them it is not to be doubted that the demand for this style of paper would be still greater; Then, again, it is proper to note that the fixtures or holders that have been heretofore provided have been constructed, principally, of metal and of a number of fitted parts, making them, on the Whole, quite expensive to manufacture even in quantities, and as the purchaser has come to expect that when he buys a number of rolls of paper he is entitled to one or more fixtures gratis the tax upon the manufacturer has become great and his legitimate profits on the paper materially reduced. Appreciating, therefore, that it is for the interest of both manufacturer and consumer that each roll of paper and its holder should be combined by the manufacturer in some economical way and sold by him as a complete article, I have devised the scheme of providing a holder of straw-board or other inexpensive material, which shall constitute a complete housing and support for the roll and as a means of attachment to a wall, hook, or other support, and which shall be provided with suitable bearings, upon which the roll may revolve as the paper is unwound, the
said roll and holder to be so combined or collocated in the manufacture as that the roll cannot be separated from the holder without destroying the latter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a combined roll and holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view showing the detached parts of the holder and roll.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
The holder consists of two main parts A and B, which constitute, respectively, the back and ends and the top and front, as shown in Fig. 3, said parts being made, preferably, of straw-board and jointed together and neatly covered with ornamental thin paper or otherwise in a manner well known to box-makers.
To the inside of the end portions are glued or otherwise secured the bearings 0, upon which the roll of paperD is supported. These bearings may consist of wooden plugs or of short cylinders of stiff paper or straw-board, as shown, or of a cylinder or core of wood or straw-board or other material extending from end to end, as preferred, though for economy the short plugs or cylinders are most suitable. The roll itself is preferably provided With'a core 01, as ordinarily, to facilitate winding it and to give it stiffness.
In the manufacture of the article the roll is applied to the bearings before the parts A and B are jointed and after the joints are closed and the article is completed it is impossible to remove the roll without destroying the holder. The upper portion of' the part A is extended and perforated, as at a to enable the article to be nailed to a wall or roll and holder, and requires no manipulation on the part of the purchaser save the hanging of it up and the withdrawal of the paper in the ordinary way.
Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim as new is- The herein-described new article of manufacture, consisting of a roll of perforated or weakened paper and a holder or housing therefor composed of straw-board or equivalent cheap material having bearings for support- [0 ing the roll, said roll and holder being so combined and collocated as that the roll cannot be removed without destroying the holder,
as set-forth.
ELISHA MORGAN.
