- UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DESMOND, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGN OR TO TI-IE HAYDEN & DERBY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STEAM-INJ ECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,339, dated December 1, 1891. Application filed July 1, 1891. Serial No. 398,099. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DESMOND, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Injectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
xo This invention pertains to certain improvements in steam-injectors, having for its object the production of an injector wherein the lifting qualities are regulated by adjusting the suction-tube and in which all the tubes may be controlled by a single valve-stem or other operating device at the discharge end ot' the injector. A
The invention consists in a steam-injector having-a water-chamber at one end, into which zo the steam-inlet and suction tubes open, said su ction-tube being adjustable with relation to said steam-inlet tube, the operating rod or stem for adjusting said suction-tube being extended through the delivery end ot the inz 5 jector and having its inward and outward movements limited by a stop located adjacent to its inner end.
The invention further comprises the detail construction, combination, and arrangement 3o of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of an injector constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View on the line a: x, Fig. 1. Fig.3 is a similar View on the line y y, same figure.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the casing; a, the steam-inlet port; d', the waterinlet port; a2, the delivery-port, and a3 the overiiow arm or branch, which is arranged at one side of the injector about midway between the water-inlet port a and the delivery-port a2. The overfiow armV or branch a3 has an inclosing casing at, the lower end of which is open, and into its upper end is screwed a plug a5, through which is passed the stem of a valve a6. This valve is designed to be seated upon the outer open end of the overiow-arm a3.
B is the Water-chamber, located in the upper end ot' casing a, the same being formed by the end wall b and an apertured diaphragm b', the latter being about coincident with or 5'5 just beneath the lower portion of the waterinlet port a. Adjacent to water-chamber B is overflow-chamber b2, from which opens the overiiow arm or branch 0,3, and next to this is delivery-chamber b3, a circular flange b4 sepa- 6o rating said chambers b2 b3 from each other.
C is the steam-inlet tube, which is preferably screwed into the threaded aperture in the end Wall b, and its inner end projects to about midway of water-chamber B. vThis steam-inlet tube opens directly into the water-chamber, no steam-chamber being employed.
D is the suction-tube, which is adjustable with relation to the steam-inlet tube C. The 7o upper portion of this ltube is projected through the aperture in diaphragm b', and at its lower end said tube is provided with a chamber or enlargement d. Within this chamber or enlargement d is a threaded ring d2, held by lateral arms d3 integral therewith and with said chamber d. Into this threaded ring is screwed the upper end of combiningtube E, with which is formed the delivery-tube F, aslot or overflow-port e marking the point ot connection between said tubes. A second slot or overflow-port e is formed in the combining-tube. Upon this tube is a cylindrical or rounded portion e2, terminating at its lower end in a flange e3, and upon delivery-tube F is a corresponding cylindrical portion f and an upper iange f.
G is an auxiliary check-valve designed to move on the cylindrical portion e2 of combining-tube E and rest' upon flange e3 or bear 9o against the lower open end of chamber d of suction-tube D. This valve is provided with upper and lower curved surfaces, as shown, so as to form a peripheral iiange g and insure a better or firmer seat for the valve against chamber d.
H is aflanged washer, through a central aperture of which the delivery-tube F is passed. This washer is firmly held in place against ange b4 by the inner end of a cylindrical eX- roo tension z', projecting from an end plug fi', screwed into the lower end of casing a. A
series of holes or apertures 'i2 is formed in extension il, through which the steam and water escape from the delivfery-chamber on the way to the boiler. washer H acts as a seat for flangef of the delivery-tube, while against its lower surface may be seated the circular end or ring t3 of a rod or stem I, said ring being supported by arms i4 of said rod or stem. Thus the washer H serves as a stop to limit the inward and outward movements of. the series of tubes and the rod or stem. This rod or stem is provided with. a thread i5, which engages a corresponding thread iu the end plug. The ring 713 of this stem is screwed onto the deliverytube, whereby by operating the handle G of said stem all the tubes can be moved simultaneously, the movement of the delivery-tube being limited byl the washer I-I. 'The same results can be secured by dispensing with the lower flange f on the delivery-tube, which latter must fit flush in the aperture of the washer.
By removing the end plug all the tubes, save the steam-inlet tube, can b e at once withdrawn from the injector. By turning the valve-stem I the suction-tube can be moved away from or toward the steam-inlet tube. In its upper position the suction-tube regulates the amount of water necessarylto work the injector on low steam pressure-say about twenty pounds-and the extreme lower position of said tube enables the injector to work on high steam-pressure-say up to two hundred pounds. In this way I am enabled to secure a high or low pressure injector, the turning of a single rod or stem resulting in securing the desired regulation. The upper position of the suction-tube is regulated by the circular end of rod' or stem I bearing against washer H, while when in its lower position flange f of the delivery-tube is seated against said washer. v
The operation of my improved injector is as follows: Steam being admitted through the steam-inlet tube and the handled rod or stem turned the desired extent, opening up the space between the Ysteam-inlet tube and the suction tube, water will be drawn into the water-chamber, and upon passing through the suction-tube will fly into the overflowchamber, and escaping through the overliow arm or branch will, upon opening the valve of the latter, create a vacuum in the casing and effect the closing of the auxiliary checkvalve G against the lower end of the suctiontube, thus cutting off the escape ot' steam and water at that point. The column of steam and water being established, the same will travel through the combining and delivery tubes and pass onto the boiler, and a vacuum being created in the overow arm or branch the overflow-valve is at once seated.
I do not restrict myself to the construction and arrangement of the suction, combining,
and delivery tubes, as above specified, since the main object of my invention is to regu- The upper surface ofA late the working of the injector so as tov secure a high and low pressure injector by controlling the supply of water through the adjustment of the suction-tube'by means extended beyond the delivery end of the injector. Therefore this latter tube can be connected and operated in any desired manner. It will also be understood that I do not restrict myself to the means shown and described for effecting an adjustment of the tubes, since other suitable or preferred means can be employed with equally good results.
I claim as my inventionl. The herein-described improved steam-V injector, having the water-chamber at one end, into which the steam-inlet tube opens, the suction-tube opening into said waterchamber and adjustable'with relation to said steam-inlet tube, the operating rod or stem for adjustingA said suction-tube, extended through. the delivery end of the injector, and a stop adjacent to the inner end of said rod or stem for limiting the inward and outward movement-s thereof, substantially as set forth.

3. The herein-described improved steaminjector, comprising the suction-tube having IOO a cylindrical chamber, a threaded ring there- 4 in, the combining-tube'engaging'said ring and having a cylindrical portion and a flange, and an auxiliary check-valve onsaid cylindrical portion beneath or to one side of said cylindrical chamber, substantially as set forth.
4:. 5. The herein-described improved steaminjector, comprising the casing having the water-chamber at one end, the steam-inlet tube opening thereinto, the suction, combining, and delivery tubes connected together, the rod or stem connected to said latter tube, and the removable end plug through which said rod or stem is passed, substantiallyas set forth. I
6. The herein-described improved steam- IIO injector, comprising the casing having the water, overflow, and delivery chambers, the steam-inlet port at its upper end, the Waterinlet port opening into said water-chamber, the delivery-port coincident with said delivery-chamber, the steam-inlet tube opening into said Water-chamber, the suction, combininggand delivery-tubes connected together, the rod or stem connected to said deliverytube, and the end plug through which said Io rod or stem is passed, substantially as set forth.
