JOHN N. DERBY, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO THE HAYDEN da DERBY lWIANUFAOTURING COMPANY, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
STEAM-INJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,303, dated October 11, 1892. Application filed May 6, 1892. Serial No. 432,071. (Model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LJOHN N. DERBY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Injectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and highly-useful improvements in steam-injectors, and relates to that class known as double-jet machines of the nature shown and described in my pending application for patent, filed March 11, 1892, Serial No. 424,691.
The present invention has for its obj ect the production of a double-jet injector in which the overflow-valve of the lifting apparatus will be automatically closed and held to its seat by the pressure in the discharge-chamber of the forcing apparatus, and the overflowvalve of the forcing apparatus is seated concurrently with the opening of the steam-inlet valve or valves of the forcing apparatus.
The invention consists in a double-jet inj ect-or having an automatic overiiow-valve for the lifting apparatus independent of the forcing apparatus, and which will be held to its seat when the latter apparatus is working by the discharge-pressure thereof, which latter is equal to the boiler-pressure.
The invention further consists in a doublej et injector having an automatic overflowvalve for the lifting appara-tus and a positively-operated valve for the forcing apparatus provided with a stem connected to and moving in conjunction with the steam-inlet valve of the forcing apparatus.
The invention also comprises the detail construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out 1n the claims. v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure' l 1s a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved injector. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are sectional views taken, respectively, on the lines w y y, and .z z, Fig. 1.
Referring to thedrawings, A designates the casting or casing, which (like the steam-inlet valves and tubes employed) is substantially the same in construction and arrangement as what is shown and described in my abovementioned pending application for patent-,and henceonlybrief reference thereto willbe made. At one end of this casing is the steam-chamber b, opening into a secondary chamber b', which communicates through a cored passage b2 with a lower steam-chamber b3 of the lifting apparatus B. Of the lifting apparatus b4 is the steam-inlet tube; b5, the valve therefor; b, the combining-tube; 127, the deliverytube formed with the combining-tube; bs, the Water-chamber, and b9 the discharge-chamber. The valve b5 is used solely for regulating the amount of steam to the liftingr apparatus in order to govern the capacity of the latter.
O is the forcing apparatus, of whichD is the steam-inlet tube; d, the main steam-inlet valve therefor; d', the primary valve seated in the main valve; cl2, the valve-stem projecting through the end wall of the casing; d3, the combining tube; d4, the delivery-tube;` d5, the waterchamber, and d6 the discharge-chamber, in the outer end of which is a check-valve di to prevent backtlow from the boiler. The discharge-chamber b9 of the lifting apparatus opens directly into or communicates with the water-chamber d5 of the forcing apparatus. Extending longitudinally through casing A is a core or shell E, forming a continuous chamber e, which opens at its inner end into an overliow duct or passage-way c', leading from the delivery-chamber d6 of the forcing apparatus to the overflow arm or branch e2. This core or shell extends across the passageway between the discharge-chamber b9 of the lifting apparatus and the water-chamber d5 of the forcing apparatus, the communication between said chambers being around said' core or shell.
F is the overflow-valve for the lifting apparatus. This valve is normally seated over an opening f in an upper inner wallf of the casing and opening into a channel f2, leading to the delivery-chamber d@ of the forcing apparatus. This valve has a stem f5, which is free to move in a plug or housingfi, screwed in the top of casing A, and is designed to be automatically unseated by the discharge from the lifting apparatus, and at'tcr the injector is started is automatically held to its seat by vor bushing g2.
the pressure in the discharge-chamber d6 of the forcing apparatus, which pressure is equal to the boiler-pressure. In one side of the duct or passage-way e is an opening g, coincident with the lower elongated portion g' of the delivery-chamber d, and in this opening is a washer or bushing g2. A plug g3 is screwed into the outer lower wall of this elongated portion, and the same is provided with an inner cylindrical portion g4, having a series of apertures or openings q5 therein. rlhis plug at its inner end is designed to bear against the outer flanged lportion of washer G is the overflow-valve of the forcing apparatus, the same being designed to close the overflow-opening g into the duct or passageway, its seat being against the washer or bushing g2. This valve G is preferably formed integral with a long valve-stem h, which is extended through core or shell E andan opening in the end wall of the injector-casing and is connected to the yoke h', to which is .also
connected the valve-stem d2, said yoke being operated by the main operating-leverh2. The inner end of this valve-stem rh is extended beyond the valve and is movable inan opening in a central stuffing-gland g6 of the plug g3, said extended end serving as a guide for the valve and its stem. The inner face of valve g G is made tapered or beveled, so that it will l gradually close yand fit tight against its seat within the overflow-opening.
The operation of my present improved steam injector as regards the steam inlet valves is substantially similar to that of the injector embraced by .my before-mentioned pending application for patent, butithe dierence in other respects will now be pointed out. The operator first opens the `primary inletvalve to a limited extent sufficient tto permit steam to pass into the secondary steam-chamchamber and from thence to the lifting rapparatus. The steam will pass through the latter and outlthe discharge-chamber up into Ithe water-chamber of the forcing apparatus, effectingtheunseatingof theoverflow-valve,and pass into the discharge-chamber of the forcing apparatus and out through the `overflowopening thereof io the atmosphere, resulting in the creation of a vacuum in the waterchamber of the lifting apparatus and the liftingof water thereinto. The overflow-waterwill follow the same course as the steam just outlined, and immediately upon the further opening of the steam-inlet valves, allowing steam to pass through the forcing apparatus, the column of steam and water will be gradually established and the `pressure in thedischargechamber of said forcing apparatus will hold the overflow-valve of the llifting apparatus to its seat, compelling the steam and water to pass through the combining and delivery tubes of the forcing apparatus. the gradual opening of the steam-inlet valves the overflow-valve G is gradually drawn to its seat, and when said steam-inlet valves Simultaneously with the discharge-chamber bearing against its outer dat face.
The advantages of my invention are apparent .to those skilled in the art to which it appertains. It will be especially observed that far better and more satisfactory results are secured by the employment of an automatic overflow-valve for the lifting apparatus, and also by making the seating of the main overflow-valve positive and certain and concurrent with the opening of the steam-inlet valves, said overflow-valve moving in unison with said steam-inlet valves.
I 'claim as my invention- 1. A lifting and forcing injector having an overflow for the lifting apparatus opening into the delivery-chamber of the forcing apparatus, as set forth.
2. A lifting and forcing injector having an overflow for the lifting apparatus opening into the delivery-chamber of the `forcing apparatus, anda valve automatically operated for opening and closing said overflow, said valve being held to its seat during the working of the injector bythe pressure in said delivery-chamber, as set forth.
