Description

(No Mod I I PU LE No. 463,425. Patented Nov. 17, 1891.
C I: V 1 :2 W a: M4
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SUSAN LODTMAN LAWV, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,425, dated November 17, 1891.
Application filed November 1, 1890. Serial No. 370,070- (No model.)
lines on the surface thereof, and provided with thirty-three holes or orifices adapted to receive thirty-two pegs or pins, one of said pegs or pins being longer than the others, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved puzzle-block, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 1] y, Fig. 1.
A represents the block, which may be made of wood or any other suitable material and ornamented in any desirable manner. The upper surface of the blo'ck is provided with thirty-three holes or orifices 1), adapted to receive the small pegs c and king-peg d, as shown in Fig. 2. Thirty-one of said orifices are filled with pegs c, and in the thirty-second orifice is placed the longest or king peg (1, thus leaving the thirty-third or central orifice empty. Having filled thirty-two of the orifices with pegs, including the king-peg,
- and having left the central orifice vacant, the
puzzle is ready for use.
In working the puzzle, begin by jumping over one of the pegs and into. the vacant orifice in the center of the block, at the same time removing the peg over which you jumped. Then proceed as in checkers by jumping the pegs. At the conclusion, all of the pegs must have been jumped over and cast aside except the king-peg, which must occupy the orifice in the center of the board, although. said central orifice must be vacant at the start.
The puzzle is to begin with all of the orifices or sockets filled except the central one, and conclude with all empty except the one in the center.
puzzle.
To add interest to the puzzle the patriotic colors are employed, as follows: The star located in the center of the block should be blue and the king-peg (1 provided with red and white stripes.
Imagine, for instance, thirty-two countries triotic colors, red, white and blue.
The upper surface of the block is provided with lines 6, as shown in Fig. 1, which serve as guide-lines for the player in solving the In jumping the pegs the player must make all jumps in either a vertical or horizontal plane across the diamond shapes formed by said lines and not in an oblique direction, for the reason that it jumps are made in the last-named direction in order to jump over and remove one peg, it will be necessary to jump four of the diamond shapes or squares formed by the guide-lines instead of two, as intended.
I claim as my invention The puzzle herein shown and described, the same consisting of a block provided with guide-lines on the surface thereof, thirtythree orifices, one of which is located in the center of said block, and thirty-two pegs adapted to fill the same number of orifices,
leaving the central orifice vacant, one of said pegs being longer than the others, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In. testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
