Jan. 22., 1923. I 1,700,016

ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 22, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON BELANGER, OF INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- FIFTHS TO EDWARD LA PAGE, OF INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MINNESOTA.
OHECKER BOARD.
Application filed February 11, 1928. Serial No. 25$, 41.
' This invention relates to improvements in games and has especial reference to the game of checkers.
An'object of the present invention is the provision of means for preventing separation of the checkers from the board, yet permitting free movement in any direction during play and Without disturbing other properly positioned checkers, and for providing for the retention of checkers taken out of play without interfering with checkers remaining in play, means being provided to position the ggecklers away from the playing area of the Another object of the invention is the provision of means for changing the value of the checkers or pieces, so that the checkers may be converted from plain checkers to ki S.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a lan view of a board and pieces constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the playing pieces.
Figure 4 is a plan view showing two of the plgiymg pieces arranged to represent pieces of di erent value.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the playing board whose playing surface is provided with squares 11 and 12.
. These squares are alternately arran ed, some of the squares being black and ot ers red,
the arrangement being the same as that of the ordinary checker board with the number of squares corresponding with the number usually rovided upon a checker board.
The c eckers or pieces used in playing the gzme are indicated at 13 and are adapted to positioned upon the board in the .usual manner and moved from space to space during the playing of the game. I
One of the objects of the invention is to prevent separation of the checkers from the a board so as to prevent the checkers from beutilized for section 20 to the section 19' in lost and for this purpose, the board is provi ed with diagonally arranged parallel slots 14, the slots extending at right angles to one another and providing a plurality of rectangularly arranged passages. The slots are T 00 shaped in cross section as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings and are adapted to receive headed studs 15 which arecarried by and extend downwardly from each of the checkers or pieces 13.
As will be seen by reference to Figure 1 of the drawing, checkers are arranged in the usual manner upon the black spaces at the start of a game and are successively moved along the slots 14 from one space to another duringplay, the direction of play being direct y from one black space to another; In the event of a player jumping one or more of the checkers of his opponent, the checker jum ing is moved alon the slot 13 through t e red s paces around the checker or checkers being jumped. .It will be noted that a jump may thus be made without disturbing the positions of any of the other checkers. The checker or checkers jumped are taken out of play by moving them along the slots through the red s aces until they are positioned within one of tlib reserve spaces 16 located at opposite ends of the board, the slots 14 continuing into these spaces. One end of theb'oard is provided with a removable section 17 which is normally held in place by, means of a screw 18 and this section is located at the juncture of two of the slots 14, so that the checkers may be removed when desired.
In order to provide for the crowning of checkers which reach the king rows, the checkers are of sectional formation and includea main or base section 19 and a top sec- 95 tion 20, which is attachel to the section 19. For this purpose the section 19 carries a staple 21 and the section 20 is provided with an opening 22 and a slot 23 to receive the staple. This manner of attachment of the mo ermits of the position of the section 20 being reversed, and when the section 20 is arranged as shown at A in Figure 4 of the drawing it represents a plain or ordinary checker, but when arranged 5 as shown at B in Fi re 4, it represents a king. In order to istinguish between the plain checker and king, the checkers may e suitably marked, that is, one face of the section 20 maybe plain while the opposite face may be provitlecl With a crown to indicate a king. I
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions ancl minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claims Having described the invention What is claimed is:
1. In a game a boarrl, pieces movable over the board, said pieces being of sectional formation, means carried by one of the sections to indicate @lifierent values anti means to connect the sections to permit of relative adjustment of said sections to change the value of the pieces.
2. In a game board, pieces movable over the board, said pieces being of sectional formation, and a staple secured in one section and engaged with the other section to permit of" the'position of the last referred to section being reversed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
